Peace Brigades International - USA

Peace Brigades International - USA PBI is an international human rights NGO that protects threatened human rights defenders worldwide.

Peace Brigades International (PBI) is an international non-profit organization, influenced by non-violent philosophies, including those of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. The founders of PBI shared a profound conviction that ordinary people can take action to stop war and human rights abuses and violations, even when their governments cannot or will not. We envision a world in which people addr

ess conflicts nonviolently, where human rights are universally upheld, and social justice and intercultural respect have become a reality. We believe that lasting solutions to conflict cannot be imposed from the outside, but must be based on the capacity and desires of local people. We have been conducting nonviolent activism and defending human rights in conflict zones throughout the world since 1981.

On December 11, Peace Brigades International-Honduras issued the following alert:

“At PBI, we are concerned about the risks faced by the leaders of the Agrarian Platform and the campesino families of the Camarones cooperative in Quebrada de Arena, Tocoa, Colón. It is important to implement effective protection measures against the attacks allegedly perpetrated by the criminal group ‘Los Cachos’.”

PBI continues to monitor this situation.

Happy Int’l Human Rights Day!

Today we reaffirm the universal truth that human rights are positive, essential, and attainable for all individuals.

This day serves as an important reminder of our collective duty to safeguard human dignity, advance equality, and promote justice within our communities and across borders. As we mark this occasion, we reiterate the importance of creating an enabling environment where every person’s rights are recognized, protected, and fulfilled.

Did you know that today is the Int’l Day for Human Rights Defenders? is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible work of ( ) that we accompany around the world. These individuals bravely do what is right despite the threats they face and continue to inspire us all to take part in making space for .

🎉 Looking for a way to celebrate the work of , , and today? Read about some of the ways that are making change:

🇰🇪 PBI - celebrates Kenya’s January 2025 decision to dissolve the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), halting a controversial nuclear program that threatened coastal communities and protected ecosystems around Kilifi. Local organizers, led by the Centre for Justice Governance and Environmental Action (CJGEA) with protective accompaniment and solidarity from PBI, pushed the debate into national view, arguing for renewable, just energy solutions instead.

🇬🇹 PBI - celebrates a June 2025 court ruling that sentenced three former members of the Civil Self-Defense Patrols to 40 years in prison each for the wartime r**e of six Indigenous Maya Achi women during the country’s brutal internal armed conflict.

🇨🇴 PBI - welcomes a June 2025 apology issued by the Colombian President to the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó for human rights violations committed between 1997 and 2007. This has been a central demand of the community for years and is a significant milestone in the community’s long struggle for truth, justice and recognition.

✨On November 29 we celebrated the International Day of Women’s Human Rights Defenders! ✨

Although the day is over, we continue to emphasize the importance of the women who are fighting for human rights every day in Honduras, especially now, leading up to the general election.

Today we put the spotlight on Lilian Borjas, human rights defender at the National Centrale van Landarbeiders (CNTC). CNTC is a small-scale agricultural and trade union organization that fights for the division of land. Lilian is fighting for access to land and food sovereignty, in a context where farm workers are still facing evictions, harassment and violence.

Thanks to women like Lilian, we’re now seeing an increasing number of female leaders within farmers’ organizations, a huge step forward in communities where this was previously hardly discussed.

💛 We celebrate her courage.
💛 We support her fight.
💛 And we continue to call for attention to the safety of women human rights defenders worldwide.

PBI-accompanied COPINH and partners are holding a press conference to draw attention to the potential for foreign interference in Honduran elections, including interference from the U.S.

They write:

🇭🇳 In the face of the electoral context and political instability, we reaffirm our call to respect the sovereignty of the country and to stop any form of interference in the internal affairs of the Honduran people.

Our sincere thanks for your donations to Peace Brigades on Giving Tuesday! If you were unable to give this week, no worries. Our yearend fundraiser is underway & you can now support PBI-USA by helping us reach our $20,000 yearend goal!

Donations from our individual supporters are so important. A recently released report shows that funding for human rights defenders is falling behind growing needs. The numbers tell a troubling story. Although public donor contributions to international development has risen above USD 612 million, the share allocated to human rights defense has dropped to just 0.10% of all public grants issued.

Today, we highlight PBI’s protection of human rights defenders by starting with the basics.

Who is a Human Rights Defender (HRD)?

A human rights defender is anyone who acts peacefully to promote and protect human rights. They are key agents for change, operating at the forefront of the global struggle for freedom, human rights, and the rule of law.

HRDs are ordinary people—from environmentalists and Indigenous leaders to lawyers and women's group organizers—who act tirelessly and non-violently to build peaceful societies.

They work to:
✅ Protect the natural environment.
✅ Seek truth about disappearances.
✅ Offer support to survivors of abuse.
✅ Fight for the recognition of land rights.

This work is vital for the development of democratic civil society, but often places them at severe risk of threats and harassment. That’s where PBI comes in. We work to bring attention to their legitimate work and provide protection when needed so the work continues.
