In Memoriam

Beloved former staff member Janet Smith, who served as NALP's Director of Publications from 1990-2016 and Senior Editor until June of 2020, passed away on Tuesday, October 17. Additional information will be posted on the NALP website. When Janet retired from her full-time position, then-Executive Director James Leipold wrote a beautiful tribute that highlights what a force she was within the NALP community and, more than that, what an extraordinary person she was. She will be mourned by many of us.

As 2022 comes to a close, the NALP community recognizes the achievements of James G. Leipold, NALP’s former Executive Director who retired in October. Leipold served in a leadership position at NALP for nearly two decades, including steering the membership and staff through the Great Recession and COVID-19 pandemic. Among Jim’s many accomplishments include helping establish NALP’s research as the trusted source of go-to information for the legal careers industry, keeping members informed through the Weekly Industry News Digest, continuing to put DEI issues front and center, supporting important and timely educational programming, publishing original content in the NALP Bulletin and PD Quarterly, assisting with the growth of Street Law, and much more.
