To the Syrian mothers who never stopped believing that Syria would be free. Who raised children between two worlds and ensured they belonged to both. Who kept the memory alive long enough to become history. To the ones who are here to see it. And to the ones we carry with us. Happy Mother’s Day.💐💚💚

Today, Syria opened its first public trial of officials who served under Bashar al-Assad — 15 years after the start of the civil war. Atef Najib, Assad’s own cousin and former head of political security in Daraa, stood in the defendant’s cage facing charges of crimes against the Syrian people.

He oversaw the arrest and torture of children who wrote graffiti on a school wall in Daraa in 2011 — the act that lit the spark of the Syrian revolution — and the torture and killing of 13-year-old Hamza al-Khateeb, whose murder became a symbol of the regime’s brutality.

This week alone: a war criminal arrested. A public trial opened. Assad and Maher charged — even in absentia.

This is a historic milestone for the Syrian people — and a testament to the power of those who never stopped demanding accountability, no matter how long it took.

The road ahead is long. But today, justice took a step forward — and that deserves to be recognized.

The Syrian American Council remains committed to transitional justice today, tomorrow, and until every perpetrator faces justice.

Transitional justice remains at the heart of Syria’s recovery.
Countless Syrians have given their lives in the pursuit of freedom.

Tadamon is a stark reminder of the atrocities carried out by a criminal regime.

Today, Syrians mark a step toward accountability with the capture of one of the most notorious perpetrators of the Tadamon massacre.

We remain committed to advancing meaningful transitional justice and ensuring accountability is not delayed or denied.

On Monday, we had the privilege of sitting down with Assistant Secretary General Robert Petit, Head of the IIIM, along with Special Advisor Reem Salahi and Lea Darves-Bornoz — a conversation that reminded us just how much is at stake for Syria right now. ⚖️

As Syria navigates a complex transition, our discussion focused on:

🔹 Justice & Accountability: The IIIM’s ongoing work with national commissions to address past crimes.
🔹 Progress Amidst Challenge: Notable steps being taken toward transparency despite the difficult landscape.
🔹 The Power of Civil Society: The vital role we play in supporting the path to a fair and just Syria.

Transitional justice is the cornerstone of Syria’s future. We are committed to ensuring this momentum continues. 🇸🇾✨

On Friday, the Syrian American Council, in partnership with the U.S.-Syria Business Council (), the American Coalition for Syria ( ), the Syrian American Alliance for Peace and Prosperity (), and members of the Syrian American community in the DMV area, met in Washington, D.C. with Syrian officials.

The meeting included Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Mohamad Kanatri, H.E. Ibrahim Olabi, Minister of Finance H.E. Mohammed Yisr Barnieh, and Central Bank Governor H.E. Dr. AbdulKader Husrieh, as well as Mr. Qutaiba Kadish.

Discussions covered key issues affecting the Syrian-American community, including consular services, temporary residency statuses, visa processes, financial transfers, and broader economic conditions.

Officials noted that reopening consular services will take time due to logistical challenges, while efforts continue to address the impact of temporary residency policies on Syrian families. They also highlighted ongoing work to ease financial transfer restrictions and improve economic conditions.

The conversation was open and constructive, with clear engagement on community concerns.

At SAC, we will continue to engage and advocate for practical outcomes that support Syrians in the U.S. and in Syria.
