✨ February Book Club Picks! ✨

Celebrate love in all its forms this Valentine’s month with three heart-felt reads we’re excited to share with you! ❤️

📖 The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern by Lynda Cohen Loigman:
A charming, multigenerational romance that proves it’s never too late for second chances. On the eve of her 80th birthday, retired pharmacist Augusta Stern moves to a Florida retirement community — and unexpectedly reunites with Irving Rivkin, the man who broke her heart six decades earlier. Alternating between her youth in 1920s Brooklyn and her present life, this novel weaves together love, loss, healing, and a touch of magical realism that will make your heart smile.

📖 How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang:
This contemporary romantic novel follows Helen Zhang, a bestselling author whose life changes when her hit YA series is being adapted for television — and she finds herself working alongside Grant Shepard, a former classmate tied to a tragedy from their past. As they navigate the emotional weight of old wounds, they discover that love and forgiveness can be messy, profound, and ultimately transformative.

📖 Love by Design by Effie Kammenou:
Love and ambition collide! Mia Andarakis has just landed her dream job at a luxury magazine — and to her surprise (and slight horror), her boss is Nicholas Aristedis, the man she’s admired from afar… who also seems to dislike her at first sight. As they’re challenged by work, life, and past heartaches, Mia and Nicholas find that love might not be as simple as a perfect design — but it could be worth the risk.

❤️ Whether you’re swooning over second chances, confronting complex pasts, or falling for love where you least expect it, we hope these picks fill your February with warmth!

📚✨ December Bookclub Picks Are Here! And SHARING is CARING! ✨📚

As the holiday season settles in, it’s the perfect time to pour a cup of something warm, curl up under a blanket, and escape into a great book. This month, we’re encouraging all Daughters of Penelope members — and your friends — to join us in reading one (or all!) of our December selections. Let’s keep turning pages together! ❤️

Here’s what we’re reading this month:

🎄 A Ferry Merry Christmas by Debbie Macomber
A heartwarming holiday novella where serendipity, second chances, and Christmas magic are front and center. When two strangers keep crossing paths on the Seattle ferry, a spark begins to grow — but timing and circumstance threaten to get in the way. Filled with Macomber’s signature charm, this story is all about hope, connection, and the unexpected ways the holidays can bring people together.

🏠 Christmas at the Women's Hostel by Daniel M. Lavery
A witty, heartfelt tale that blends humor with gentle reflection. Lavery crafts a unique holiday story set inside a women’s hostel, where an eclectic cast of characters tries to find comfort, community, and meaning during the season. It’s clever, tender, and rich with the kind of observations that make you smile and think.

🕊️ The Black Angels by Maria Smilios
A powerful work of narrative nonfiction that shines a light on the Black nurses who helped bring an end to the tuberculosis crisis during the early 20th century. These courageous women — known as the "Black Angels" — faced discrimination while risking their own health to care for the sick. Smilios tells their long-overlooked story with compassion and depth, offering an inspiring and eye-opening read.

💬 What will you be reading first?
Whether you’re in the mood for festive romance, thoughtful storytelling, or a moving historical narrative, December’s picks have something special for everyone. Happy reading, Sisters! And please SHARE! 📖💙

📚✨ November Bookclub Picks
Brought to you by the Daughters of Penelope Foundation Inc. — our mission: to spark conversation, promote literacy, and share the joy of reading together. These three selections were chosen to generate rich discussion and reflection.

📕 The Girl in the Green Dress by Mariah Fredericks

Set in the glittering Jazz Age of 1920s New York City, this historical mystery opens with the discovery of a body in 1950, then shifts back three decades as journalist Morris Markey investigates the murder of gambler Joseph Elwell — and the trail leads him into the orbit of Zelda Fitzgerald and her husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Markey becomes drawn into a world of high society glamour, reckless abandon, and a mysterious young woman in a vivid green dress who may hold the key to the crime.

📕 The Greek House by Dinah Jefferies

In 1930s Corfu, returning to her family’s beloved villa stirs painful memories for Thirza Caruthers: the scent of jasmine, the green-shuttered house, and her brother Billy’s mysterious disappearance years earlier.

As Thirza immerses herself in painting and begins a forbidden affair, the seemingly idyllic setting slowly unravels. Love, envy, betrayal and long-buried secrets awaken, forcing the family to confront what they’ve tried so hard to forget.

📕 Mona’s Eyes by Thomas Schlesser

Ten-year-old Mona experiences a startling episode of blindness. Instead of a standard medical regime, her grandfather Henry (“Dadé”) takes her on a year-long journey through Paris’s great museums — one masterpiece each week — to build a “reservoir of beauty” in her memory, in case her sight is lost.

What begins as a visual odyssey becomes a tender coming-of-age story about love, art, resilience and the bonds between generations.
