DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative We believe that every DC student in need of additional support can and should have access to a tutor or mentor. Learn more about us at: www.dctutormentor.org

We are a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to empowering students in the District of Columbia and transforming the community. DC Tutoring and Mentoring Initiative
(1) recruits and mobilizes local volunteers
(2) links them with tutoring and mentoring programs/organizations already in operation
(3) provides on-going support to these organizations
in order to reach out to every DC youth in need of additional academic and non-academic support.

The weekend is here!

Our team is looking forward to meeting families at Capitol Hill BID's Ready, Set, Safe! Back-to-School Family Day at Eastern Market and the Culture Quest Kids Fest: STEAM & Creativity Lab, a free community festival celebrating culture, creativity, reading literacy, and STEAM (DC Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Mayor's Office on African-American Affairs, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities).

Downtown at Franklin Park, we will join The Difference Society's Keys to Wealth Fest, where families can access free financial wellness resources. The Difference Society always brings the energy and good music to the party!

In the afternoon, we will be at the 19th Annual Six Month Moratorium To Stop The Killings! Cookout/Amateur Boxing Match, organized by Cease Fire. Don't Smoke The Brothers & Sisters. We’re grateful for the organizers and neighbors working together to end community violence and provide resources to youth and families.

Yoga and salsa will also continue at Columbia Heights Green!

Then on Sunday, we’ll be at the Bloomingdale Farmers Market to share fall volunteer opportunities. Some programs have already started, and many need volunteers NOW!

We appreciate everyone’s patience as this is the busiest time of year for us to match volunteers. We aim to have everyone connected within 1-2 weeks to a program, but during this time of year, it may lean closer to 2 weeks.

Tomorrow’s the big day! Cease Fire. Don't Smoke The Brothers & Sisters' 19th Annual 6th Moratorium to Stop the Killing Cookout/Amateur Boxing Match is expecting to feed over 4000+ people at the Upshur Rec Center!

We bumped into the Cease Fire family loading up a U-Haul earlier today.

The event will provide free health screenings, backpack giveaways, live music, speeches, and art focused on community violence prevention. Our team will be there to share tutoring and mentoring opportunities in the neighborhood.

Thank you to everyone in the community working together to end senseless violence and show love to our youth.

The Dolly Parton Scholarship opened doors for high school seniors from rural Sevier County in Tennessee, Dolly’s hometown. One of our community members, Sean Eldridge, was a scholarship recipient.

As he shares, it allowed him to graduate debt-free with a BA in Criminal Justice from Hampton University.

Sean grew up in a small rural town in Kentucky, home to about 2,000 people. While the scholarship program served youth in Sevier County, he had landed a summer job at Dollywood through a youth program. Because of that, he was eligible to apply for the scholarship and was awarded $10,000.
We met Sean at one of our Civic Dialogue Friendlies over at our parent organization, CivLead. The project pairs people of different political beliefs together for conversations over Zoom. Facilitated discussions help participants connect with one another as friends and human beings, while expanding our understanding of the values, experiences, and information that shape our beliefs.

In a similar way that Dolly served and was beloved by those across geographic, political, and racial lines, we believe we CAN work together to build a more loving, caring world – especially for our youth.

We remember Dolly’s work championing education and a love for reading. Her Imagination Library ships millions of free books each month to children around the world.

“When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer.

The seeds of these dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.”

Join us for FREE community yoga and salsa dancing this Saturday at Columbia Heights Green (located behind 3321 11th St – a short walk from the Columbia Heights metro station). RSVP on Eventbrite:

Yoga runs from 10-11am with @‌d_yoga_dude! Expect some satisfying stretches and poses to build strength and stability.

Then, we turn up the heat with @‌vibinsalsa from 11am-noon! No partner or experience is required! Make some friends as we groove over beginner-friendly footwork and partnerwork :)

Have policymaking experience? Volunteer for a day and help build youth power in policymaking with Learning Life!

As a volunteer Policy Advisor or Policy Mentor, you’ll support 8th-12th graders from schools across the DC area participating in the [Youth Summit on Youth Policymaking on Oct. 10th. There, students will be developing and pitching policy that addresses the needs of youth 18 and under in the DC area!

💻VIRTUAL | Policy Advisors:
Introduce the policymaking process at the school, city, county, or state level in a 2-hour Zoom session on Saturday, Sept. 26 or Oct. 3, from 1–3pm.

👥IN-PERSON | Policy Mentors:
Guide a group of students at the Summit as they develop and present a policy proposal to the full group. The Summit runs Saturday, Oct. 10, from 2–5pm at the DMV Democracy Festival (All Souls Church Unitarian, 500 Harvard St NW).

These are the minimum time requirements, but there are many more activities leading up to and after the Summit that you can join to deepen your impact!

All advisors and mentors are required to have paid professional policymaking experience at the school system, city, county, or state government level, with the advisor position requiring at least 5 years of experience.* This can include work in research, advocacy, or government.

While you only need to dedicate a few hours, your exposure and guidance will help youth become more effective and confident deliberators and leaders!

Today was the first day of school for DCPS students! We’re wishing students, parents, educators, and administrators the best!

Besides WISHING for the best, we’re WORKING toward it! Pictured here is one of our Neighborhood Supported Schools, Malcolm X Elementary, where volunteers come during the day to support teachers with small group/one-on-one tutoring and classroom activities. The joy on kids', Howard University students', and our team members' faces tells all!

Your next chapter: tutoring and mentoring! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat with us at the National Book Festival!

The final weekend before the first day of school also brought us out to Freshfarm's H St NE Market, Arlington Market, and the Mosaic Market.

In total, we signed 75 people up to get started or learn more about tutoring, mentoring, or coaching. The cool weather was a relief, and seeing fall foot traffic back in the area makes us feel hopeful for what’s to come.
