Fall into some FREE community yoga and salsa dancing this Saturday at Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park!

Yoga runs from 10-11am with guest instructor Griffen this week. Tap into the relationship between caring for yourself and caring for others as we move through an all-levels class.

Then, letā€™s shimmy it out with Vibin Salsa, the funnest and friendliest dance class in town! The beginner-friendly class runs from 11am-noon, no partner or experience necessary.

Being active outdoors and active in your community can go hand-in-hand. We can build discipline, patience, and kindness by working on ourselves. That in turn can feed into and sustain our work in the community!

Mid-October means weā€™re pushing forward steadily with our fall volunteer recruitment! Even though most programs have started already, many students are still waiting for a tutor or mentor!

Over the long weekend, our team canvassed at Freshfarm's Mount Vernon Triangle, Monroe St, and Downtown Silver Spring Markets!

We also participated in a workshop about democracy in education at the DMV Democracy Festival, organized by Learning Life on Saturday.

As usual, yoga continued at Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park. Our guest instructor Phyllis brought energy, new postures, and creative freedom to our class! Thank you Phyllis!

And it was great to kick off a new round of our neighborhood-based volunteer info sessions in Navy Yard!

We asked you to stop complaining about the youth and start being there for them!
Many thanks to all who joined us at our Navy Yard volunteer info session to learn about becoming a tutor, mentor, or coach.

Neighbors stayed after our partners' presentations to ask questions and chat. They were engaged, open, and even shared their experiences having a mentor with us on camera (interviews soon to come)!

Special thanks to Carl and BEST Kids Mentoring Program for hosting our event at their office. It was powerful to hear about the impact mentors can have on youth in the foster care system.

Dan from Wrestling to Beat the Streets DC shared ways volunteers could support their free wrestling and youth development programs that build character, community, and resilience for kids in DC.

And Lauren from Community of Hope DC welcomed volunteers to support programs for families overcoming homelessness. By spending time with children through play and games, volunteers can support kids' creativity and the development of social skills!

It was a great crowd on Saturday, and we know there are more caring adults out there. We want to meet you too!

If you signed up and weren't able to make it, DM us now and learn how you can help us make a difference. Every little bit of support helps.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Children in Horton's Kids are twice as likely to graduate from high school compared to neighborhood peers. Thatā€™s thanks to strong partnerships with families, schools, and community members like you.

As a tutor with Hortonā€™s Kids, youā€™ll pour love and care into the lives of youth in Wellington Park & Stanton Oaks. These neighborhoods in SE DC have been profoundly impacted by decades of disinvestment and barriers to opportunity.

Tutoring sessions run Monday-Friday from 3:30-6:30pm at Hortonā€™s Hub in 2233 Hunter Pl. SE. Volunteers should commit to tutoring one day per week!
ā€¢ Elementary school tutoring: Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays 3:30-6:30pm
ā€¢ Middle school tutoring: Tuesdays or Thursdays from 3:30-6:30pm, Saturdays 10am-1pm
ā€¢ High school tutoring: Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays from 3:30-6:30pm

Youā€™ll work with the same small group of students on reading and/or math each week! And youā€™ll discover the joy of being a consistent, trusted role model for local youth.ā™„ļø

Phyllis is passionate about creating welcoming, inclusive classes that combine mindful movement, strength, and breath. She believes yoga is for every body and looks forward to sharing the practice with the community!

Then, we'll turn the heat up with Vibin Salsa from 11am-noon!

Join us for solo footwork and partnerwork that will impress your friends, family, and yourself! No experience or partner required.

Caring for our community and caring for ourselves go hand in hand. We hope you explore these practices with us and sign up to volunteer!

Learning has a home here, and so do you! At Beacon House, youā€™ll join a community that serves over 400 students (K-12) a year through academics, mentorship, and athletics!

Make a difference for students by tutoring (Grades K-8), mentoring (Grades 5-12), or being a positive presence during afterschool programs.

These include creative play, literacy, homework help, academic enrichment (math, science, reading), STEM projects, career exploration, emotional wellness, goal-setting, healthy relationships, business, creative media, sports, leadership, and more!

Programs run Monday-Friday from 3:30-6:30pm (times/day vary by program). Volunteers should dedicate a minimum of 2 hours per week, for at least 8 weeks to build positive relationships with students.

Thatā€™s one 2-hour session per week for tutoring programs, or two 1-hour sessions for mentoring programs. Beacon House (601 Edgewood St NE) is located in Edgewood, easy to access from NoMa, Eckington, and Brookland!

JOIN US! In Navy Yard.

Saturday October 10, 2026 at The Yards (1212 4th St SE #201, Washington, DC 20003) a 6 minute walk from the metro stop. Take the elevator to the 2nd floor and weā€™ll be at the last door to your left!

Earlier this year, lots of people were complaining about the teen takeovers in DC/Navy Yard. Weā€™re inviting you to do something about it this coming weekend.

Learn how you can be a positive role model in a young personā€™s life by becoming a tutor, mentor, or coach in your neighborhood.

Become that extra caring adult YOU needed growing up, and support the programs providing positive spaces for young people to learn and hang out.

Our volunteer info session will share how you can get involved 1-2 hours a week. You can help with reading and math, but also in non academic ways, like becoming a mentor. Many kids simply need an extra caring adult in their lives.

Get off the sidelines and the comments section in social media and commit to making a difference with us.
