ONE DC Located in Washington DC, our mission is to exercise political strength to create and preserve racial and economic equity in Shaw and the District.

At ONE DC, our mission is to exercise political strength to create and preserve racial and economic equity in Shaw and the District. We seek to create a community in DC that is equitable for all. We have three main organizing areas: One Right to Housing, One Right to Income, and One Right to Wellness. Under our Right to Housing Campaign, we assist tenants with organizing and strengthening their as

sociations, purchasing their residential buildings, and providing education on tenant rights. The ONE DC Black Workers Center (BWC) is a member-led space that builds racial and economic justice through popular education, direct action and worker-owned alternatives. The People’s Platform is a movement of low-income and working class DC residents of color and people who share our values and vision. We seek to organize, educate, fight for and win truly affordable housing, sustaining work, and wellness for all in DC. The state of income & housing security and wellness for DC residents is bad and only getting worse. Where the city has successfully encouraged wealthier and whiter residents to move into the city, it has destroyed welfare and social programs, attacked workers’ rights and supported a severe reduction in spending on programs for the most vulnerable. The beneficiaries of this policy are the wealthy.

We are so excited to share with you Rosemary’s first book: The Undesirable Many - Black Women and Their Struggles Against Displacement & Housing Insecurity in the Nation’s Capital. Her book is a captivating case study of Black women’s defiant pursuit of truly affordable housing and the oppositional actors who seek to undermine their goal.

This Women's History Month, we honor the tenant leaders of Heritage at Shaw/LWII, all Black women who were so principled and disciplined that they fought for affordability to the T. Legacy mattered more than profit/money. Because we organized, we got the city to back us in one of the first DOPA notices the city has issued in years. That political move allowed this developer (pictured in third slide) to come in and tell the tenants that they are committed to realizing tenants' vision of permanent affordable housing. It will be a multi-family community with three and four bedroom units.
More updates to follow in the coming weeks! This is tenant power at work!

COMMEMORATE BLACK AUGUST
Black August is a month of commemoration, celebration, discipline, work, study, and resistance.
Black August began in California prisons as incarcerated people commemorated the death of their fallen comrades. During that month, they fasted, studied and committed to the work of revolution.
Black August offers us a chance to (re)commit to Love, Study, and Struggle.
