We must not forget any sentences handed down to the murderers pale in comparison to the years of life they callously stole from Ahmaud Arbery. Justice will be achieved when Black Americans no longer have to worry about guns catalyzing the deadly weapon of racism and hate.

Whether the three white men sentenced to life in prison in state court for murdering Ahmaud Arbery also are guilty of hate crimes is now in the hands of a federal jury.

The Newtown settlement should put gun manufacturers on notice that they will be held accountable. The families who lost loved ones at Sandy Hook, and so many others, deserve justice. While far from enough, today's news is a step in the right direction.

The settlement with the maker of the rifle used in the 2012 elementary school massacre marks the first time a gun manufacturer has been held liable in a U.S. mass shooting.
