Here is a sign posted at the AFT building, which houses the
AAUP's DC office, establishing this as the sole entrance for AAUP staff, making every other entrance to the building a "neutral gate." A neutral gate is a picket-busting tactic where certain entrances are reserved for the exclusive use of other parties, contractors, etc., for deliveries and other business, and cannot be picketed. Shouldn't labor organizations like AFT and AAUP be protecting concerted activity...?

Today we are announcing that an unfair labor practice (ULP) strike will begin next week. We have waited so long to declare a strike because we held out hope that management would recognize that it was in the best interests of the AAUP to negotiate in good faith and settle a contract with its staff. Why won't the AAUP bargain with us? From our latest Substack post: "The US-AAUP submitted to the National Labor Relations Board two charges of unfair labor practices, including the failure to fulfill information requests related to AAUP finances and failure to bargain in good faith, with the removal of thousands of dollars in retroactive pay for staff as evidence of a regressive pattern of bargaining that demonstrates an intention not to settle." “The AAUP national office’s staff union, the independent United Staff of the AAUP (US-AAUP), has been without a contract for nearly a year. And that union’s members say AAUP management has been rejecting their demands to provide more equitable benefits to all national staff, including lower-ranking employees, who are more likely to be people of color.” New piece in Inside Higher Ed looking at our fight for equity as we close in on one year without a contract. Sabbaticals, in-person workdays and guaranteed raises are elements of a dispute that’s meant staff members at the American Association of University Professors have been out of contract for a year.
