We urge members of the Virginia Senate Commerce and Labor Committee to support , legislation that would improve for patients across Virginia. Step therapy requires patients to try and fail on older, often less expensive treatments before receiving the one their doctor had prescribed. You can follow this link to tell your elected officials to support the bill:

24 million people could lose their health insurance, and your voice could make the difference!
We need to reach out to your Senators TODAY and ask them to not vote for ANY bill that doesn't protect patients and ensure access to affordable care!
Your Senator could provide that crucial swing vote. We believe any bill should be thoughtfully and thoroughly considered before it is passed into law, especially a bill that could have such a dramatic effect on adults and children as the American Health Care Act.
What does the American Health Care Act do? While the bill keeps some patient protections, like preexisting condition coverage, it also rolls back the Medicaid expansion, lessens subsidies for families buying their own coverage and enacts high penalties for those who drop coverage.
Now more than ever, it is crucial to stay involved and take action. You can choose to either email or call your Senator. Through these actions, you will ensure that the patient's voice is heard.

“On Monday, the National Patient Advocate Foundation was in Raleigh to testify on the patient issues surrounding step therapy practices. Earlier this year, Doris Ann Price, one of our patient advocates in North Carolina, was interviewed by WRAL about her experience with step therapy: http://www.wral.com/lifestyles/healthteam/video/14690619/. While the feature ends by stating that “Blue Cross Blue Shield offers a flexible appeals process for patients”, testimonies presented by patients on Monday’s step therapy hearing state the contrary: http://www.wral.com/lawmakers-examine-insurers-effort-t…/…/…. The appeals process for patients is not user-friendly and often leaves patients waiting for extensive periods of time for their originally prescribed treatment. It is in due time, we ask the North Carolina legislature to fix this issue and protect patients from barriers to care!”

According to new government predictions, the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer will rise by as much as 50 percent by 2030. Researchers say the increase in tumors will be fueled by the hormone estrogen. While this is a natural hormone produced by the body that is responsible for reproduction and bone growth in both men and women, environmental exposure to xenoestrogens— an unnatural sub-category of estrogen— is at an all-time high.

Only 7% of all federal breast cancer research funding is earmarked for metastatic disease, despite its accounting for at least 30% of all breast cancers (either at diagnosis or by progression).

In May of this year, a snakebit Missouri man died after refusing to seek medical care, saying he couldn't afford the bill.
One San Diego man was bitten by a rattlesnake earlier this month, and left the hospital with a $153,000 bill.
Administrators protest that it doesn't represent what he may actually be billed or what they will make from his visit.
We need more transparency in medical billing, and more reasonable deadlines for when they must pay. Todd Fassler's bill is a perfect example — he left the hospital on July 9, 2015. His bill said his $153,000 payment was due by July 27.

Earlier this month a guy named Todd Fassler was bitten by a rattlesnake in San Diego, KGTV San Diego reports. In itself this isn't terribly unusual — the CDC estimates that roughly 7,000 to 8,000 people a year get bit by a venomous snake in the United States. And somewhere between five and six peopl…

Thirty-nine states and the District of Columbia have passed “oral chemo parity” laws. North Carolina is one of only 11 states in the United States where cancer patients who get their treatment in pill form pay much more than those who get chemotherapy by infusion or injection.

The difference in out-of-pocket cost between pills and injections results from a quirk in health insurance. Under most insurance plans, chemotherapy delivered through infusions or injections in a doctor’s office or hospital clinic are covered under the medical benefit. But newer, more expensive cancer drugs in pill form are typically covered as a pharmacy benefit, under separate plans with higher cost-sharing requirements for patients. In recent years, oral medications have become more widely available – and in some cases preferable for convenience and effectiveness – to infusion therapy.

Good news to head into your weekend! The House of Representatives passed the 21st Century Cures Act, and importantly, without the Brat Amendment, which would have severely hurt its funding. It now heads to the US Senate, where it will most likely be taken up in the fall.

The 21st Century Cures Act passed by a wide 344-77 margin. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
