A Russian drone struck a residential building in Galati, Romania on May 29 -- injuring two civilians and igniting a fire on the roof of a 10-story apartment block near the Ukrainian border.
Romania scrambled F-16s, summoned the Russian ambassador, and is fast-tracking anti-drone defense contracts under the EU's SAFE programme. Bucharest has formally called the incident a serious violation of international law and is pushing NATO to accelerate anti-drone capability transfers.
This is not an isolated event. Romanian airspace has been breached repeatedly since 2022. What happened in Galati this week is the clearest illustration yet of why Romania's security architecture -- and the U.S.-Romania strategic partnership -- matters beyond the abstract.
Alianta has long advocated for a stronger, better-resourced Romania within NATO. That work is more relevant today than ever.

The incident injured several people and stoked fears that Russia will attempt to spread violence beyond Ukraine.
