10-year-old Melissa Shang has started a Change.org petition to create an American Girl doll with a disability. Melissa says, "disabled girls are American girls too". Learn about Melissa's story and check out her petition!

A bright and adorable 10-year-old is petitioning the American Girl brand to name a doll with a disability as its 2015 "Girl of the Year" because "disabled girls are American girls too," she says.

A new study by Vanderbilt University has shown the positive effects of iPads in teaching children with Autism to speak.

A new program, iCan Bike, has students with disabilities to learn to ride bikes from their peers. This peer to peer interaction has students feeling more independent and forming new friendships.

Disability Studies has become an increasingly popular field of study, with over 35 universities offering courses.

A spokesman from Syracuse University describes their program as: “Disability studies starts with accepting the disability. Then it asks the question: ‘How do we equalize the playing field?’."

A progressive and empowering approach, for those able-bodied or not, that says: a disability is not a deficit that needs fixing.

High school senior Zach Hodskins, who was born without his lower left arm, was told he would never play college basketball. Zach pushed forward and proved them all wrong earning a place on University of Florida's team next fall.
