Reno Sparks is in the news again for being the USA's fastest warming metro. 😰🔥
Expansive parking lots are a costly drain on a city's vitality and are a top contributor to our urban heat island.
Events and large businesses should be required/incentivized to provide and promote alternatives such as carpooling, transit, and bikes. At the Earth Day fest, we parked 127 bikes (many carrying kids/passengers). Compare this to a parking lot for 127 cars.

Did you know that men are 2.6x more likely to bike to work than women?
One of the reasons we are so excited about RTC's is that it will provide protected routes to and through Downtown Reno to major destinations like University of Nevada, MidTown Reno, and more. When protected bike networks like BLBN exist, the number of cyclists increases, but the number of women riding jumps even more-- sometimes by a factor of 2-3x! The BLBN can help Reno close its cycling gender gap.
Here's a recent study that backs up previous research with similar findings:

We have too many roadway fatalities in Nevada -- especially among pedestrians and bicyclists! And so many of these fall on children and young people, denying them decades of life.
Safer street design is the best approach but it takes time.
Many jurisdictions have turned to safety cameras to reduce the most dangerous driving behaviors quickly (flagrant speeding, red light running). And it works!
Ottawa 🇨🇦 found that speed cameras in school zones 🚸 reduced "high end speeding" (~10 mph over limit) by a factor of 47x (from 14% of to 0.3% of vehicles) after cameras were installed.
If we care about protecting lives and restoring the freedoms that come with safer streets, Nevada should consider these life saving tools.
