Meet Yvonne, a lifelong DC resident, advocate, and senior living on a fixed income.

Through the food bank’s Silver Market program in partnership with United Planning Organization Yvonne is able to access fresh, nutritious produce that supports her health and helps stretch her budget each month. 🍎

What started as a place to pick up groceries has also become a place of connection and community.

Head to our blog to read more about Yvonne’s story and how Silver Markets are helping seniors across our region access the food they need to thrive. 🔗

There’s something powerful about stepping into one of our partner organizations’ spaces and seeing the meaningful work they do firsthand 🧡

Our team recently volunteered with Bread for the City in their choice pantry.

Seeing food from the food bank on pantry shelves while volunteering with one of our longtime partners made the day especially meaningful and was a great reminder of how many people and organizations come together to help support food access across our region!

🎉 More than 200 families served — and we’re just getting started! 💚🥦

This week, we celebrated the growing impact of the Capital Area Food Pharmacy at UM Capital Region Health, where we're collaborating to bring together nutritious food and healthcare to support healthier communities across Prince George’s County.

Through the partnership between the Capital Area Food Bank and University of Maryland Capital Region Health, patients facing food insecurity can receive fresh produce and nutritious groceries tailored to support conditions like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and high-risk pregnancies — all at no cost.

🍎 Around 40 pounds of healthy groceries every two weeks
🏥 Convenient access alongside medical care
💚 A shared commitment to better health outcomes

At our open house celebration, community leaders, government officials, advocates, and healthcare partners saw firsthand how “Food Is Medicine” is making a real difference in people’s lives.

May is Military Appreciation Month, and we’re proud to support veterans, active service members, and military families across our region.

At Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, military spouse Megan Rowley noticed neighbors quietly struggling to access food and decided to do something about it.

What started with connecting families to groceries and resources grew into a volunteer-run food pantry and monthly Mobile Market partnership with the food bank that now supports military families throughout the year.

The pantry is also home to Pantry Pete 🪿, the friendly porch goose who has become the face of the program!

What does it take to help provide millions of meals across the DMV each year?

In a recent conversation with Community DC on iHeartMedia DC, our CEO Radha Muthiah spoke about the realities of food insecurity across our region, the partnerships that help make this work possible, and the incredible community that continues to show up for our neighbors every day.

From volunteers and donors to nonprofit and community partners across DC, Maryland, and Virginia — this work is only possible because of our strong community.

We’re grateful for every person helping make our work possible!

Fresh food, student volunteers and families showing up for one another 💚

Our Family Markets bring farmers market style food distributions directly to schools across the region, making it easier for families to pick up fresh produce and pantry staples right where their kids already are.

At Weller Road Elementary, the market has become a monthly community tradition powered by students, staff and families together.

As one mom shared, “Groceries are expensive, so having this once a month is really helpful, especially with growing boys who eat a lot.”

Step inside Weller Road’s Family Market and meet two members of the community helping make it all possible on our blog: https://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/blog/2026/05/14/a-look-inside-weller-road-elementarys-family-market/
