It’s been 3 weeks since Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful storm ever to hit , devastated the island. The hurricane caused nearly $8 billion in damage (almost half of Jamaica’s annual GDP), destroyed or impaired more than 116,000 structures, damaged 40 percent of buildings and roads in the west, rendered 54 health facilities inoperable, and disrupted power across the island. In the western parishes, where between 85 and 90 percent of households were damaged, entire townships like Black River were destroyed as the storm surge swept inland, wiping out even reinforced concrete buildings.

The destruction has crippled Jamaica’s agricultural heartland, creating a long-term shortage of locally grown food. Humanitarian needs remain severe, with limited access to food, water, and sanitation, and recovery efforts are still uncovering bodies trapped beneath debris. The disaster is projected to set back Jamaica’s economy by at least two years.

It builds on the work of the Digital Trade and AI Task Force, convened by the Mexico Program since 2025. It presents actionable policy recommendations to strengthen USMCA Chapter 19 (Digital Trade) and advance a more integrated and inclusive digital economy across North America. On November 5, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted the 10th Annual Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala, bringing together partners from across the hemisphere to celebrate leadership, collaboration, and our shared commitment to democratic resilience, shared prosperity, and social inclusion.

This year, the Dialogue honored Mónica Aspe for her leadership in expanding meaningful connectivity—aligning closely with the Dialogue’s commitment to closing the gender digital divide and strengthening STEM opportunities for girls across the region.

Ambassador Carla Hills and Thomas “Mack” McLarty (McLarty Associates) were recipients of the Enduring Voices Award for their many contributions to the Dialogue and to the Americas. Both served in senior board leadership and helped shape the Dialogue for more than three decades. Their partnership in advancing North American integration and strengthening regional cooperation reflects the organization's founding mission.

The evening was a true celebration of the Dialogue’s mission to foster cooperation, mutual understanding, and constructive exchange across differences.

recently extradited to the United States Roberto Carlo Girón Hernández, whom U.S. authorities accuse of leading a co***ne trafficking network, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced Sept. 9. The announcement came a month after U.S. authorities announced the extradition to the United States of another Guatemalan, Romeo Ramos Cruz, who is accused of being a key member of a drug trafficking organization. How well are the administrations of U.S. President Donald Trump and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo cooperating on antidrug efforts?
