The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to announce that Jaime Pumarejo, executive director for Colombia and Peru at the Inter-American Development Bank and recipient of the 2023 Leadership for the Americas Award, will present the Award for Youth Opportunity and Crime Reduction to Federico "Fico" Gutiérrez, mayor of Medellín, Colombia, at the 2026 Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala.

Pumarejo brings a distinguished record of leadership across the public and private sectors. He served as mayor of Barranquilla from 2020 to 2023 and previously served as Colombia's minister of housing, city, and territory. As mayor of Barranquilla, he advanced the city's urban, social, and environmental transformation, with significant progress in education, public spaces, ecosystem restoration, and the energy transition.

Now serving his second term as mayor of Medellín, Gutiérrez has focused on strengthening citizen security and expanding opportunities for young people. He previously served on Medellín's City Council and has worked on urban security initiatives across Latin America.

The Inter-American Dialogue is honored to announce that Mayor Federico Gutiérrez of will receive the Distinguished Leadership for the Americas Award for Youth Opportunity and Crime Prevention at the 2026 Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala, taking place October 22, 2026, at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC.

The award recognizes Mayor Gutiérrez’s leadership in advancing an integrated approach to public safety, combining effective law enforcement with economic and social opportunities for young people vulnerable to recruitment by criminal groups. This approach is at the center of Medellín’s Parceros Program, which provides at-risk youth with pathways to education, employment, skills development, and community engagement. The results have garnered international attention. In 2025, Medellín’s homicide rate fell to 11.7 per 100,000 persons, the lowest point in 40 years and less than half the rate of Colombia as a whole.

The annual Gala convenes an influential network of policymakers, diplomats, business executives, and civil society leaders from across the Americas to recognize individuals whose leadership is responding to the most critical opportunities and challenges facing the region.

The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to announce that Jacqueline Charles, Caribbean correspondent at the Miami Herald, will serve as Leader of Ceremonies for the 2026 Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala, taking place October 22, 2026, at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC.

A veteran journalist, Charles has spent her career reporting on the most consequential developments across the , bringing the region's stories to audiences around the globe. A Pulitzer Prize finalist, she has been recognized for her coverage of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and for her investigation into the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. She has been described as “Haiti’s ambassador to the world.”

Following a conference in Bogotá convened by the Inter-American Dialogue's Peter D. Bell Rule of Law Program and Hemispheric Security Initiative with partners Asocapitales, Portafolio, and El Tiempo, a new report examines the challenges local leaders face and offers recommendations to strengthen Colombia's security response.

The Inter-American Dialogue's Board of Directors announced today that it has unanimously elected Alfonso Prat-Gay and Kellie Meiman Hock as its new Co-Chairs, and Juan Carlos Pinzón Bueno as Co–Vice Chair, joining Ambassador Donna Hrinak, who continues to serve as Co-Vice Chair.

As the Americas navigate a period of profound economic and geopolitical change, their vast expertise will help advance the Dialogue’s mission.

and : what does the data actually show?

In a new interview with DW News, Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances, and Development Program at the Inter-American Dialogue, explains why remittances and migration intentions often move in opposite directions.

"The more remittances a household receives, the greater its capacity to save and invest locally—and not migrate," Orozco explains. As remittances decline, the intention to migrate rises. Comparing 2024 to 2026, that intention hasn't budged: around 15% of households still say they want to emigrate.

In Central America, where public investment is limited, remittances account for 35–40% of private consumption, helping families meet daily expenses while also increasing their ability to save.

Orozco's outlook for next year is that a migration trend is likely, despite the anti-immigration policies currently in place at the border.
