Our summer Japan in DC program has been a whirlwind. Six weeks of exploring the presence of Japan in our city. The weather was finally beautiful on Wednesday, so we decided to take a walk around the Tidal Basin, and passing through the FDR Memorial found ourselves facing a hard truth that we know has been an unfortunate part of the US-Japan story. "I HAVE SEEN WAR. I HATE WAR" is a message we can all get behind. United States-Japan Foundation

Here we go! Our 2026 Japan in DC summer program has launched! Over six weeks these fantastic DC students, representing ten different high schools, will investigate the presence of Japan in their city. They've spent the last two days getting to know each other and prepping for their upcoming encounters with a wide variety of people, places, organizations, and experiences - all in DC and all with a connection to Japan. Remembering March 11, the date of the Great East Japan Earthquake, now 15 years later. Remembering all those lives lost and communities devastated. At the same time, the tragedy of that day set in motion a series of events and decisions that led to the creation of new opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration between the United States and Japan. We are so lucky to have been included in six years of TOMODACHI US-Japan Youth Exchange Programs between DC public high school students and their peers from Japan. The hospitality, generosity, and resilience of the Japanese people we met along the way, even those in the most challenged circumstances, will stay with all of us forever.

Globalize DC is currently making preparations to launch our new 2026 Japan-related programming for DC public school students. If you're a current DC public high school student with an interest in Japan, you might be interested in getting involved. Learning about Japanese society, culture, and language is challenging, crazy interesting, and a lot of fun. We will also be looking for partners, volunteers, and PT staff as the month proceeds.
