Spotify is expanding its investment in emerging independent artists with Fresh Finds Forward, a new initiative expected to support approximately 10,000 artists annually.

According to reporting from Rolling Stone, the program will provide participating artists with access to resources that may include studio time, creative and industry tools, community programming, wellness support, and potential opportunities tied to touring and music-video development. Partners connected to the initiative include platforms such as LANDR and Splice.

The move reflects a broader shift in artist-development programs toward support that extends beyond streaming visibility alone.

For independent artists, the larger question is what happens after discovery: access to resources, professional development, infrastructure and opportunities that can help turn attention into a sustainable career.

As platforms continue expanding artist-support programs, DCMS will be watching how these initiatives are structured, who gains access and what measurable opportunities they create for independent musicians.

On This Day: September 28, 1976

Stevie Wonder released Songs in the Key of Life—an album that would become one of the defining works of his career.

From “Sir Duke” and “I Wish” to “Isn’t She Lovely” and “As,” the album gave us records that still resonate 50 years later.

Its legacy speaks for itself: a Grammy for Album of the Year and a place in the National Recording Registry.

And 50 years later, the music is coming back to the stage.

Stevie Wonder is taking Songs in the Key of Life on an anniversary tour, performing the album in full—and Washington, DC is on the list for November 23.

Beyond the stages, studios and venues, DC’s music ecosystem supports 266 music establishments, 5,903 songwriters and 4,811 jobs contributing $1.1 billion to the District’s GDP, according to 50 States of Music District of Columbia.

We’re excited to continue “You Gotta Leave DC to Get Love: Why the DC Music Scene Needs Sustainable Infrastructure” with support from a 2026 HumanitiesDC DC Oral History Collaborative grant.

Through interviews and storytelling, we’re documenting the voices of artists and music industry professionals who have helped shape DC’s music scene while exploring what it takes to build sustainable creative careers right here in the city.
