We commend Secretary Rubio for his unequivocal condemnation of Milorad Dodik as a threat to Bosnia and, by extension, U.S. interests in the region. For too long, Dodik has actively worked against Bosnia’s constitutional order and undermined U.S. strategic objectives.

USABiH remains committed to partnering with the State Department, Congress, and other institutions to counter those who jeopardize the security and stability of both the United States and Bosnia.

In their latest opinion piece, selected for Editor's Choice on BalkanInsight, our team members, Harun Buljina, PhD, and Alma Begic argue that the U.S. must reinvigorate its commitment to proven allies in the Western Balkans, particularly Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, to protect its own regional interests and national security imperatives.

If Washington aims to safeguard US interests as well as peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it should stop appeasing secessionists and Putin allies and instead strengthen democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

ON THIS DAY | In December 1995, Senator Joe Biden took to the Senate floor in support of sending American troops to Bosnia with a mission to keep the fragile peace just after the signing of the Dayton Accords. Today, we honor the legacy of the Bosnia Hawks, a bipartisan group of senators co-led by the late Senator Bob Dole and then-Senator Biden, for their consistent and passionate commitment to ending the war and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992-1995.

Today we celebrate the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Under U.S. leadership, the BiH armed forces were officially unified as a multiethnic force in 2005. We thank service members for their dedication and commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and recognize the historical role of the United States.
