For the first time in forever…… 🎶 (21 years to be exact) the rank order of purchase drivers has changed!

For 21 years the IFIC Food & Health Survey has asked consumers what purchase drivers impact their food and beverage choices. For 20 years the order was the same: taste, price, healthfulness, convenience, and environmental sustainability.

In 2026, we see a change! Convenience has now surpassed healthfulness as the third most prominent purchase driver.

⚠️ Communicating About Risk
Hazard is the ability of a substance or agent to cause adverse effects whereas risk considers the probability that harm will occur.

Example: Being near a shark
Hazard: A shark has the potential to cause harm.

Risk: The likelihood of harm depends on your exposure to the shark. A person observing a shark from the safety of the beach has a much lower risk of harm than someone swimming near it.

⚠️ Absolute vs Relative Risk
Absolute Risk refers to the actual risk of an occurrence, the chance that a specific outcome will occur.

Relative Risk puts risk in comparative terms—the outcome rate for people exposed to the factor in question compared with the outcome rate for those not exposed to the factor.

Example: If an outcome occurs in 1 out of 10,000 people without an exposure and 2 out of 10,000 people with an exposure, the relative risk is twice as high, but the absolute increase in risk is 1 additional case per 10,000 people.
