Shark Advocates International (SAI) is dedicated to conserving some of the ocean's most vulnerable, valuable, and neglected animals - the sharks. With the benefit of nearly two decades of achievement on the front lines of shark fishing and trade debates, SAI provides leadership in advancing science-based national and international policies to protect endangered species of sharks (and closely relat

ed rays), limit fishing and trade, and strengthen bans on “finning” (slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea). SAI works nimbly and efficiently in the toughest policy arenas, defending existing safeguards, and promoting the next most significant and urgently needed measures. Driven by a deep commitment to speaking up for the sharks, we specialize in building support for common conservation goals among diverse stakeholders (including other conservation groups, scientists, diving associations, animal welfare organizations, and fishermen) and appealing to governments on behalf of coalitions. With a premium on accuracy and perseverance, SAI works to both communicate the plight of sharks, and to channel the resulting public concern into concrete, long-lasting conservation action.

“In the global tropics artisa**l take can be as high or higher than that from industrial fisheries, and can be the key driver of declines that are leading us rapidly to extinctions,” said Luke Warwick, Wildlife Conservation Society, adding that artisa**l fishing has already led to the disappearance of sawfish from much of Africa.

In Senegal, artisa**l fishing kills a surprising number of sharks and rays, according to a new study — so many, it probably eclipses industrial fishing, which is more commonly blamed for the species’ decline. The study was published in the journal Ecology and Evolution in March. Researchers a**l...

“Manta and devil rays face a number of direct and indirect threats. By far the most concerning is overfishing and fishing-related mortality. These are highly mobile and migratory animals. Even if they don’t face the same level of threat in the Azores, the same individuals can be fished elsewhere. We need to understand their movements to protect them effectively.”

"They are likely far more widespread than we know. There just aren’t people sampling the depths to frequently see them," said Dr. Dean Grubbs of the deepwater shark.

When Dublin scientist Emma Murphy got word that a dead Greenland shark had washed up on the shores of northwestern Ireland, she was gobsmacked. Not only are the massive and ancient ocean dwellers notoriously elusive, but they usually make their homes in the remote depths of the Arctic and North Atla...

MANCORA, Peru — The largetooth sawfish is a critically endangered fish distinguished by its long, blade-like snout edged with tooth-like projections. In the waters off Peru, it’s become an unlikely casualty of one of the country’s most entrenched traditions: cockfighting. The elongated “teet...

Looking back on shark & ray conservation progress in 2025, we're deeply grateful for your support. We welcome year-end contributions of any size to enable us to continue our collaborative, science-based advocacy in 2026. More than 70 shark and ray species have been given new international trade protections after concerns over their populations rapidly disappearing.

Sweeping new global trade protections for sharks and rays were just adopted at CITES CoP20 in Samarkand. It is one of the most ambitious conservation wins in history, but whether it becomes a true turning point depends on what happens next.
