🎓 How do Germany’s Universities of Applied Sciences help drive innovation and workforce development?

Last week, our Program Manager Madeline Bauman and SVP Ilonka Oszvald met with Patrizia Nobbe from UAS7 – German Universities of Applied Sciences, the alliance of seven leading German Universities of Applied Sciences.

We discussed the unique role these institutions play in higher education through:
🔹 Practice-oriented teaching
🔹 Strong partnerships with industry
🔹 Applied research and innovation
🔹 Clear pathways from education to employment

We also explored current priorities, including strengthening international academic partnerships through Germany’s , expanding talent recruitment and faculty mobility, and creating more opportunities for researchers, students, and faculty interested in transatlantic collaboration. 🌍

It was inspiring to learn more about UAS7’s efforts to increase visibility in North America and build connections between Germany and the United States. 🇩🇪 🇺🇸

Thank you, Patrizia, for the insightful conversation and for sharing updates on UAS7’s exciting work and future initiatives!

What a fantastic day in Chicago! ⚽🇩🇪 🇺🇸

More than 1,000 members of the German-American community came together at the Fußball Biergarten ahead of the US Men's National Team's FIFA World Cup 2026™ send-off match against Germany at Soldier Field. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow Humboldtians, DAAD alumni, and friends while celebrating the strong ties between our two countries.

A special thank you to Ambassador Jens Hanefeld, Consul General Michael Ahrens, Christian Strowa, and the DAAD team for helping bring this vibrant transatlantic community together.

Events like these highlight the unique power of sports to connect people across borders. The friendship between Germany and the United States was on full display throughout the day, both on and off the field.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, this gathering offered a glimpse of the excitement, connections, and international spirit still to come.

Visitors explored French and German culture, connected across disciplines and borders, and learned more about transatlantic research and funding opportunities. The event highlighted the enduring importance of international collaboration in research and higher education.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn more about the Humboldt network and connect with fellow scholars, researchers, alumni, and policy professionals.

Special thanks to our colleagues and partners who helped make the day possible, including the German Embassy team, DFG North America, DAAD German Academic Exchange Service (USA), German Aerospace Center (DLR), and German Historical Institute Washington. 🇫🇷 🇩🇪

Building stronger transatlantic academic networks starts with . 🌍🤝

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Margaret Eleanor Menninger, Executive Director of the German Studies Association (GSA), for a conversation on future partnership opportunities between our organizations.

As GSA celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, we discussed new ways to strengthen academic connections, expand outreach, and support scholars across institutions and borders.

Ideas included:
🔹 Alumni receptions and networking opportunities in the DC area
🔹 Joint outreach initiatives nationwide
🔹 New ways to connect scholars through the

In challenging times for higher education and international exchange, conversations like these matter more than ever. As Dr. Menninger said: “the more solidarity, the better.”

When the headlines feel relentless, where do we find the bright spots? Sometimes, in Berlin. 🇩🇪✨

In an essay for our newest issue of Connect, AFAvH Board member Lee Ann Banaszak and SVP Ilonka Rosemarie Oszvald reflect on their week in Germany, where they attended the workshop “Building Resilient Higher Education Systems: A Transatlantic Perspective,” hosted by the Mellon Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the 2026 Philipp Schwartz Forum.

They met with higher education experts from both sides of the Atlantic and heard from researchers who, after facing threats in their home countries, are continuing their work in Germany.

Their takeaway: simply reacting to events is not enough. Lasting people-to-people connections through exchange programs, research collaborations, and institutional partnerships are what help us learn from one another and move forward together. 💚

Through efforts like the and the programs of the , these connections can continue to grow and endure.

What does world-class research support actually look like? More than you might expect.

Meet Humboldtian Prof. Dr. Manuel Smeu—Associate Professor of Physics, Applied Physics and Astronomy at Binghamton University—whose time as a Humboldt Research Fellow at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) proved to be as enriching personally as it was scientifically.

In this video, Manuel reflects on the exceptional support Germany offers researchers—from the flexibility to bring family along, to the opportunity to connect with world-class scientists, immerse himself in German culture, and even learn the language with support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

From Binghamton’s classrooms to Ulm’s innovative labs, Manuel’s experience is a testament to how the right environment and community can elevate a researcher’s work and broaden their world in ways that go far beyond science.

🎥 This is the latest feature of our “Humboldtians in Focus” campaign, which highlights the diverse and impactful work of our 6,000 US alumni.
