NYU Shanghai and the US-China Education Trust (USCET) cordially invite scholars and students from all disciplines to the 19th American Studies Network (ASN) Conference, "America at 250: Where has it been and where is it going?", to be held in-person in Shanghai on November 14, 2026.

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, this year's conference will bring together scholars across disciplines to examine America's political development, social change, and foreign policy over the past 250 years. Together, these threads raise a larger question, one that asks what they mean for the future of the international order and U.S.-China relations. Taking place shortly after the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, the conference offers a timely opportunity to consider what the results signal about the country's political direction.

Does spending time in China prevent you from gaining a U.S. government security clearance?

On September 8, USCET hosted a briefing with the FBI examining how academic travel to China is considered in the U.S. government security clearance process. The program featured a conversation between Joshua Obstfeld, senior executive for external engagement in the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, and Margaret K. Lewis, professor of law at Seton Hall University.

Obstfeld emphasized that travel to China is not automatically disqualifying and that clearance adjudications use a whole-person assessment. He encouraged travelers to keep reasonable records, be candid about their contacts and experiences, follow university security procedures, and report suspicious outreach through established channels. The discussion also addressed how the FBI distinguishes foreign-intelligence risks from ethnicity, national origin, or family ties, and returned to a central challenge: sustaining firsthand China expertise while taking security responsibilities seriously.

What does a career in U.S.-China policy look like today? What opportunities exist for those hoping to work on China across government, business, think tanks, and NGOs?

On Wednesday, October 14, from 6:00–7:15 PM, the U.S.-China Education Trust (USCET), in partnership with the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, the Elliott School Graduate Student Services office, Young China Watchers, and Career China Newsletter invites you to join us for “China Connections: Breaking Into U.S.-China Policy Work” at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.

The evening will open with a keynote from Robert Daly, founding director of the Program on China and the United States at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, followed by a panel discussion featuring Kalisha Holmes of the U.S. Department of State, McCall Mintzer of Boeing, Neil Thomas of Asia Society Policy Institute, and Bernice Xu of The Asia Group. USCET Managing Director Ryan McElveen will moderate the discussion.

Our speakers will share insights from their career paths, highlight career opportunities across the U.S.-China field, and offer practical advice for those considering careers in foreign policy. A light reception and networking session will follow the discussion.

On August 12, USCET partnered with the 1882 Foundation to host Drawing Between Worlds: Asian American Graphic Memoirs and the Search for Belonging, bringing together graphic authors Ruth Chan, Malaka Gharib, Leise Hook, and Kathy MacLeod for a discussion moderated by David Yao.

The authors explored the unique power of graphic memoirs to tell deeply personal stories about identity, family, migration, and belonging, while reflecting on their creative processes, multicultural backgrounds, and the ways words and images can communicate complex experiences.

On July 20, USCET partnered with the Society for the Social Science Study of China (SSSSOC) to host a discussion on academic fieldwork in China, bringing together scholars who have recently conducted research in China and continue to engage in fieldwork on the ground. Speakers explored the current landscape for China fieldwork, including changing access conditions, building research relationships, navigating risk, and adapting research methods in a more complex environment.
