On August 12, USCET partnered with the 1882 Foundation to host Drawing Between Worlds: Asian American Graphic Memoirs and the Search for Belonging, bringing together graphic authors Ruth Chan, Malaka Gharib, Leise Hook, and Kathy MacLeod for a discussion moderated by David Yao.

The authors explored the unique power of graphic memoirs to tell deeply personal stories about identity, family, migration, and belonging, while reflecting on their creative processes, multicultural backgrounds, and the ways words and images can communicate complex experiences.

Drawing Between Worlds: Asian American Graphic Memoirs and the Search for Belonging

On August 12 from 10:00–11:00 AM ET, join the US-China Education Trust and the 1882 Foundation for a virtual discussion featuring graphic authors Ruth Chan (Ohtruth Illustration), Leise Hook, Kathy MacLeod, and Malaka Gharib.

Part of USCET’s Asian American Authors Series, this event will explore how graphic memoirs combine words and images to illuminate experiences of identity, migration, family, memory, and belonging. The conversation will highlight recent works including Chan’s Uprooted, Hook’s Names and Faces, MacLeod’s Continental Drifter, and Gharib’s I Was Their American Dream and It Won’t Always Be Like This.

Through this discussion, the authors will reflect on their creative processes and the ways visual storytelling can challenge stereotypes and give form to experiences that are difficult to express through words alone.

On July 20, USCET partnered with the Society for the Social Science Study of China (SSSSOC) to host a discussion on academic fieldwork in China, bringing together scholars who have recently conducted research in China and continue to engage in fieldwork on the ground. Speakers explored the current landscape for China fieldwork, including changing access conditions, building research relationships, navigating risk, and adapting research methods in a more complex environment.

On Monday, March 23, USCET held the public launch of its Working Group report, America's China Talent Challenge: Investing in Deeper American Understanding of China, at the Elliott School of International Affairs.

The report takes stock of a growing expertise gap in American understanding of China and lays out a roadmap for reversing it. Ambassador Nicholas Burns delivered opening remarks, underscoring the issue as a national security imperative. Working Group members David Lampton, Mark Lambert, Mahboubi, Jean Oi, and Madelyn Ross elaborated on the report's findings and recommendations.
