Louisiana alligators on the international stage 🇺🇸🐊🇮🇹

Louisiana’s alligator industry had the opportunity to share its story on an international stage at LINEAPELLE in Milan, one of the world’s leading exhibitions for the leather industry.

Louisiana alligator farmers Jeff Donald, Nathan Wall and Christen Wall each took part in the program, sharing perspectives shaped by generations of experience in the American alligator industry. Christen joined an international panel alongside crocodilian producers from Africa and Australia, as well as experts representing animal welfare, conservation, international trade, tanning and the luxury sector.

The conversation covered crocodilian production systems around the world, science-based animal welfare, conservation and sustainable use, traceability, legal international trade and responsible sourcing.

For our Louisiana representatives, it was an opportunity to share a story we know well: how alligator farming and ranching can work alongside the management of healthy wild populations and the wetlands they depend on, while giving an international audience a closer look at the people behind our industry.

We’re proud to see Louisiana alligator farmers represented in conversations happening around the world and even prouder to continue sharing the story of an industry rooted right here at home.🐊💚

Even with GPS coordinates, it takes a trained eye to be able to spot an alligator nest. Did you spot it before the farmers?👀🐊

Yesterday, leaders from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Department of the Interior, state wildlife agencies, the alligator industry, and conservation organizations gathered in Washington, D.C. for Scales of Success: The Triumph of the American Alligator.

As part of the Great American Expedition and the America 250 celebration, the program highlighted one of America’s greatest conservation success stories through the U.S. premiere of Scales of Success, a short film showcasing the recovery of the American alligator and the partnerships between wildlife agencies, private landowners, researchers, and alligator farmers that made it possible.

Following the film, speakers and panelists discussed the future of alligator conservation and management, emphasizing the importance of science, responsible stewardship, international cooperation, and sustainable use in ensuring this success story continues for generations to come.

We extend our sincere thanks to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, The Origins Foundation, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and all of the organizations and individuals who made this meaningful event possible.

Here’s to celebrating 250 years of America and continuing this conservation success story for generations to come. 🇺🇸🐊

Can you spot the alligators nests? Swipe to reveal answers👀

Most people picture alligator nests hidden deep in remote swamps, but every nesting season farmers find them in some surprising places…including alongside busy interstates and railroad tracks!

Female alligators build nests from surrounding vegetation, and when you know what to look for, they start appearing everywhere!

There it is!

Can you find it?🕵️

Right off the railroad tracks!🚂

Do you see it?🔎

Found it👏

Spotted during egg collection season in Louisiana: a massive male alligator with a smaller gator in its mouth😵‍💫🐊 If you didn’t know, alligators are cannibals. This is one of the contributing factors to the low survival rate of wild alligator hatchlings. Nature is a wild place!

It’s officially alligator mating season in Louisiana. 🐊

As temperatures rise in late spring, alligators become much more active throughout swamps, marshes, and bayous across the state. Courtship behavior typically begins in May and can continue into June, with nesting season following shortly after.

During this time, it’s normal to:
• Hear loud bellowing
• See increased movement in waterways
• Notice more territorial behavior from males

Louisiana’s wetlands are entering one of the most important periods of the alligator life cycle.💚🐊
