Fleet of Angels

Fleet of Angels Fleet of Angels is a one-of-a-kind, multi-award-winning nonprofit organization that provides grants and emergency services to help horses in crisis.

FleetOfAngels.org WHO AND WHAT IS FLEET OF ANGELS? Fleet of Angels is a national service organization whose core mission is to help equines in crisis when their owners are unable to do so. A priority of the organization is to help prevent horses from being permanently separated from their loving families due to temporary hardships caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, floods,

blizzards, Covid-related crises, or life-altering circumstances like family member deaths, serious injury or illness, other major emergencies. HOW HAVE OUR MICRO-GRANTS HELPED HORSES? Some of our successes include:
+ Through our HayThere! Emergency Horse Hay micro-grant program Fleet of Angels provides horse hay and emergency supplies to thousands of equines in crisis each year. In 2020, FOA helped feed over 5,000 at-risk equines. In 2021, over 4,800 equines were assisted with critically needed emergency feed.

+ Fleet of Angels has assisted with the costs of life-saving veterinary care in numerous situations where a FOA micro-grant has made the difference between saving the horse or possibly losing it due to the owner's inability to cover needed care.

+ Through our network of thousands of caring trailer owners across the nation, our FOA members help transport many at-risk equines each year from danger to safety at affordable prices in situations were equine lives are at risk. Our Transport Angels are on call 24 x 7 to provide transport services in evacuation emergencies, disaster response, recovery, and relief. They also work tirelessly on day-to-day missions, transporting equines to rescue them from abuse, abandonment, and other life-threatening circumstances. In many cases, the only fees charged are for fuel or other out-of-pocket expenses. FOA works closely with authorities, providing transport of legal seizures, retrieval of stolen horses, and more. We also provide equine location, capture, and foster care services as needed for loose or displaced horses. We also assist hay banks that provide emergency feed during crises, by facilitating donations of hay and transporting it to the hay banks as needed in disasters and emergencies. Assistance with funding of vet costs in special cases is sometimes possible. FOA works through official channels, and members are required to follow appropriate chains of command and official protocol when working on missions managed by FEMA, HSUS, and other organizations that follow standard ICS (Incident Command System) procedures. The Fleet of Angels interactive Directory and the Map of Angels are both available for public use at www.FleetOfAngels.org (or www.FleetOfAngelsMOBILE.com for mobile devices). By utilizing these resources, anyone needing assistance transporting an at-risk equine can use the search features to find and contact the closest Transport Angels to their location, from among the thousands of registered Angels. Fleet of Angels has facilitated the transportation of hundreds of at-risk equines all over the US and Canada, and have been leaders in the evacuation and/or rescue and recovery missions of horses, mules, and donkeys during hurricanes, multiple tornadoes, wildfires, droughts, abandoned horses, wild horses rescued from BLM 'concentration camps', and many other emergency events.

⚠️ Tropical Storm Arthur is brewing in the Gulf, bringing the threat of heavy rain, flash flooding, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes across parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.

For horse owners, flooding can quickly become life-threatening. Roads may become impassable, pastures can flood within hours, and access to feed, clean water, and veterinary care may be disrupted.

Now is the time to prepare:
✔️ Ensure your horses have current identification✔️ Photograph each animal and keep records accessible✔️ Stock up on hay, feed, medications, and water✔️ Fuel trailers and tow vehicles✔️ Check fencing and shelters✔️ Identify evacuation routes and safe destinations

Don't wait until floodwaters rise to make a plan.

Fleet of Angels is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to assist equine owners impacted by natural disasters.

If you're in the storm's path, stay weather-aware and check on fellow horse owners in your community.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and remember preparation saves lives.

HAIL-DAMAGED BARN RECEIVES HELP TO KEEP OHIO SANCTUARY HORSES SAFE AND DRY

An Ohio equine sanctuary received emergency assistance from Fleet of Angels after severe wind and hail storms caused major damage to its barn, leaving horses exposed to dangerous flooding conditions.

Marion Brill of Mount Vernon, Ohio, operates Sanctuary at Wild Rose Acres, where she provides equine therapeutic interaction and cares for four equines, including three full-sized horses and a pony.

In March 2026, powerful winds and penny-sized hail shattered all 30 skylights in the sanctuary barn. Rain poured through the damaged roof panels, creating standing water and deep mud inside the barn while exposing the structure itself to ongoing water damage.

The flooding created serious health concerns for the horses, including conditions that could lead to hoof abscesses and increased mosquito exposure. With the barn continuing to take on water during storms, urgent repairs became critical to keeping the animals safe and dry.

In the middle of managing the storm damage and flooding, Marion was also diagnosed with Lyme disease, a serious illness that can cause fatigue, joint pain, neurological complications, and other long-term health effects if left untreated.

After exhausting local emergency resources, many of which only provided residential assistance, Marion turned to Fleet of Angels for help.

With support from our donors and community, Fleet of Angels was able to help with replacement skylight panels for the barn, allowing the sanctuary to begin restoring safe shelter for the horses before additional storms caused even greater damage.

Marion shared, “My horses and I are so grateful for the angels at your organization. Thank you so much Fleet of Angels!”

She later told us of the repaired skylights finally keeping the rain out, along with images of her horses finally able to rest comfortably in a dry barn once again.

Thanks to our supporters, Fleet of Angels can step in when emergencies threaten the safety and wellbeing of horses and their guardians.

TORNADO-DAMAGED WISCONSIN EQUINE SANCTUARY RECEIVES HELP REBUILDING HORSE SHELTER

A Wisconsin equine sanctuary received emergency assistance from Fleet of Angels after a tornado severely damaged one of its primary shelter buildings, leaving several horses without adequate protection from the elements.

Ivelolharele Retirement Sanctuary in Chilton, Wisconsin, provides lifelong care for retired horses, offering a safe place for animals to live out their later years with dignity and comfort. The sanctuary is home to 18 equines, including full-sized horses and miniature equines.

In May 2026, a tornado struck the property, causing significant damage to a 40-by-100-foot arena barn that served as shelter for four horses and several alpacas. The storm left part of the structure exposed and unsafe, creating an urgent need for repairs before future severe weather could put the animals at risk.

The sanctuary leaders focused first on securing and enclosing the damaged portion of the building so the horses would once again have a safe, protected place to shelter during storms and harsh weather.

With support from our donors and community, Fleet of Angels was able to provide a grant to help fund those critical repairs.

In their thank you message, Bruce and Jody Tveit shared, “This critical support is directly funding the reconstruction of our arena barn, a vital hub for our residents’ exercise, therapy, and overall well-being, especially during inclement weather. Thank you for empowering our mission to provide these animals with the dignified retirement they truly deserve.”

For sanctuaries like Ivelolharele, shelter is far more than a building, it’s protection, comfort, and security for horses that have already given so much throughout their lives.

Thanks to our supporters, Fleet of Angels can help sanctuaries recover from disaster and continue providing safe refuge for horses in need.

FOA HELPS NEW MEXICO COWBOY PROTECT WILD HORSES

In the rugged high country of northern New Mexico, Jonathan "Poss" Chapman has spent years caring for wild horses that have nowhere else to go.

Today, ten wild horses depend on him for food and safety. They all face an uncertain future if they wander too far from the area where Poss watches over them, as in this remote region free-roaming horses can be vulnerable to people who view them as targets rather than living creatures deserving of protection.

Furthermore, this year brought drought and pushed the situation to a critical point. With little winter snow and almost no spring rain, grass that would normally sustain the horses simply never arrived.

As pastures dried up, the herd became increasingly dependent on hay, and Poss found himself facing the possibility of running out within days.

For these wild rescue horses that have already been through so much, a prolonged hay shortage could have devastating consequences.

With support from our donors and community, Fleet of Angels was able to provide emergency hay assistance, helping ensure these horses continue to receive the nutrition they needed while longer-term solutions are pursued.

We applaud Poss' unwavering dedication to these wild horses. Through drought, shrinking resources, and uncertain conditions, he has remained committed to keeping them safe, fed, and protected. Thanks to our supporters, Fleet of Angels can stand alongside people like Poss when horses have nowhere else to turn.

This is an interesting article on the severity of various types of bits, with a ranking of most gentle to most severe, created by the author and written a couple of year ago. The ranking may not be exactly accurate in everyone's opinion, but it does seem to have merit. And, the writer provides excellent information about 10 types of bits, as well as hackamores (bitless bridles).

Discover the severity of common horse bits in order of harshness, with a scale of 1 to 10. Also, what makes a horse bit more severe and tips.
