When polling places are short staffed, lines can grow, ballot processing can slow down, and routine delays can be twisted into false claims that something has gone wrong.

That is why communities across the country urgently need more people willing to serve as poll workers.

Election deniers are ready to exploit any delay or confusion to sow distrust, especially when their preferred candidate does not win. Fully staffed election operations help voting and ballot counting proceed efficiently, leaving less room for bad actors to challenge legitimate results or spread conspiracy theories.

Serving as a poll worker is a practical way to support voters, strengthen confidence in our elections, and serve your community.

Let’s help make our election work for everyone! Get started by visiting powerthepolls.org/peoplefor.

Heading off to college—or dropping off your freshman soon? 🎓

Sure, you’ve picked up new twin-sized sheets, packed some favorite snacks, and somehow fit all the campus essentials into a few boxes and suitcases.

But don’t forget these must-haves to get college life off to a good start!

🎨 Mini-posters to make a dorm room feel cozy
💌 Postcards to send updates home
✨ Stickers to customize laptops, water bottles, and notebooks
🗣️ Ideas and inspiration for making a difference in a new community

And one more thing before you wave goodbye:
🗳️ Make sure they’re registered to vote!

College students can register to vote either in the new state where they now attend school or plan to vote by absentee ballot in their home state, but plan to stick with only one residency. Every state has different rules and deadlines. Be sure to check what’s required for your jurisdiction.

College is about more than getting ready for the future. It’s also a chance to start shaping it. So don’t forget to pack a little civic joy as part of your care package.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: VICTORIA CASSINOVA

“I’m fascinated by the mind and soul’s capacity to turn grief into meaning—how destruction and creation can exist in the same breath,” says Victoria Cassinova.

This is a theme that can be found in many of the art pieces created by the accomplished Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist.

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, threatening reproductive freedom, Victoria felt an immediate impulse to create art. Within days, her piece “My Choice” was born—a powerful work we’re honored to feature in The Art of Saving Democracy.

And when her brother took his own life in 2023, she returned to childhood photographs of the two of them playing, transforming memories into a deeply personal series of paintings.

Through art, Victoria converts pain into purpose and reminds us that confronting what hurts us most can help us to process it, find hope again, and begin healing.

Learn more about Victoria’s journey as an artist this Saturday at the Santa Monica Library.
