[ ] Evacuees in Gaza continue to live in overcrowded tents and shelters, and with the majority of clean water sources destroyed and everyday items blockaded, sanitation conditions have deteriorated to a dangerous degree.

Peace Winds and our local partner in Gaza have been working to improve such conditions for children and teens sheltering in Gaza City. We are providing hygiene kits throughout several shelters and also running hygiene education activities. These are designed to be both educational and a small respite from the stress of daily life in Gaza.

Peace Winds will continue to support dignity for displaced families in Gaza however we can, despite the grueling conditions they continue to endure.

[ ] Emergency disaster expert and physician Dr. Mototaka Inaba leads Peace Winds’ ARROWS disaster medical team, responding to many natural disasters in Japan and abroad. After treating survivors of the July earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, he took on a new challenge: managing an evacuation center.

“In a way, this might be more nerve-wracking,” are the words he uttered before starting his first night shift.

Dr. Inaba has had to get to know residents well enough to manage their individual day-to-day needs. Now that they have spent two months (and counting) in crowded evacuation centers, this is not without its challenges. But Dr. Inaba and his colleagues remain patient and compassionate, prioritizing communication so that they can understand and address the nuanced issues each individual is facing.

[ ] In honor of World Food Day on October 16, this month’s Project of the Month Club donations will support Peace Winds’ hot meal program for earthquake survivors in Venezuela.

Peace Winds has resumed its “Takidashi” hot meal program to keep survivors nourished and to strengthen the community bonds that recovery depends on. It draws its name from the Japanese practice of preparing and distributing hot meals after a disaster.

In partnership with Noraneko, a local ramen restaurant, and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Venezuela, our team prepares hot meals, most often Japanese curry and yakisoba, and serves them at several sites across La Guaira. This program also supports the recovery of local businesses.

We will continue delivering essential assistance for months to come, including this hot meal program, as communities move toward recovery.

[ ] In mid-August, record-breaking torrential rains caused severe flooding and widespread damage across southeastern South Korea. In the immediate aftermath, Peace Winds teams on the ground began delivering emergency relief, and they continue to support affected communities as survivors navigate the road to recovery.

Peace Winds has provided daily necessities, hygiene items, and cleanup equipment and also distributed portable gas stoves and butane canisters to families facing limited access to electricity and gas.

We remain committed to standing alongside affected communities, listening to their evolving needs and providing support at every stage of recovery.

[ ] Today marks three months since two devastating earthquakes struck outside of Caracas, Venezuela.

Peace Winds responders arrived on site and began emergency relief within 72 hours, treating survivors who desperately needed medical care. Our Caracas-based team continues to deliver critical supplies to families who lost their homes and serve hot meals from local restaurants. Above all, the most valuable thing we have shared is human connection.

[ ] Since a massive flash flood swept through northern Nepal on August 26, Peace Winds disaster responders have worked alongside local partners to deliver urgent relief.

Recently, our team has provided kitchen supplies, including cookware, gas cylinders, and stoves, to several hundred families. For survivors who lost both their homes and belongings, a basic kitchen kit and gas supply allowed them to cook for themselves and take a first step toward rebuilding their daily life.

We'll keep listening closely to survivors, making sure no one is overlooked, as we plan what support comes next.

[ ] The instability of life after disaster has also taken a toll on animals in Kumamoto. To help families with pets, Peace Winds has been providing pet supplies, and our staff recently opened a doggie daycare.

We also held a grooming event thanks to the help of volunteer groomers. Prolonged water outages had been making it difficult for residents to keep their pets clean, and sessions allowed people to notice changes in their animals’ health so they could get proper care.

[ ] While major infrastructure has been steadily restored after the earthquakes in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture, Peace Winds continues to identify new challenges and remains engaged in relief and recovery efforts alongside survivors.

Temporary housing units are now becoming available for those who lost their homes, so our staff are helping evacuees make the transition out of evacuation centers. They are also managing four of the remaining evacuation centers and making sure that support reaches those sheltering elsewhere.

[ ] Peace Winds recently began a new project to improve maternal, child, and primary healthcare for refugees and local residents in northwestern South Sudan.

Currently, the Wedweil Primary Health Center has no permanent maternity ward, unreliable electricity, and poor sanitation facilities.

This program will build a new, solar-powered maternity ward as well as water pumps, showers, and toilets that are gender-neutral and handicap-accessible. It will also give local groups the tools they need to manage the facilities and spread health and hygiene awareness to the broader community.

[ ] Peace Winds operates Kensing II in Palau, a ship equipped with medical supplies and staffed by doctors and nurses to deliver basic healthcare to communities in the remote Southwest Islands. The ship also supports public and nonprofit organizations working in hard to reach areas.

Most recently, Kensing II supported Island Conservation’s efforts to restore coastal ecosystems and improve seabird nesting habitats by removing invasive species. Crossing the Pacific to deliver people and supplies where they are needed, Peace Winds will continue supporting Palau’s islands and communities through Kensing II.
