World Refugee Day is coming up soon! This month, we're directing your Project of the Month Club donations toward helping refugee women in Uganda become auto mechanics, tailors, and small business owners.

Uganda is one of the most welcoming countries to refugees in the world, but its resources are strained, and economic opportunities are limited. Women are among the most vulnerable.

So Peace Winds’ programs are helping refugee and local women build their independence and get a fresh start. Your donations go beyond supporting just job training; they help create a place for women to build communities and gain confidence. This can go a long way for those who have been forced to uproot their lives and begin again in a new country.

[ ] "Water was a really big problem for us. We used to have to wake up early and wait in a long line to collect dirty water. Now we can get clean water close to our homes, and it’s made life much better for the women and children.”

Peace Winds recently completed construction of wells that are delivering safe water to the homes of refugees and local residents of Aweil West County, northern South Sudan.

The project is being done in partnership with the local government and community-based organizations, building their capacity to keep clean water flowing in the long-term, and they will soon take over ownership and maintenance of the system.

[ ] With just 18,000 residents, it's no surprise that the remote island nation of Palau faces a chronic shortage of skilled health care workers.

In a meeting with the Office of the President, Republic of Palau, President Surangel Whipps Jr. lauded Peace Winds' dispatch of three medical professionals from Japan on long-term assignments to help fill the gaps. He encouraged Peace Winds to explore ways of bringing more medical professionals to the country.

An ER physician, a nurse, and the country's first radiology technician are currently based in Palau through a Peace Winds program. They are treating patients and helping train other providers at Belau National Hospital.

[ ] Thanks to your support, lifesaving medical supplies have landed in South Sudan from our partner organization, Direct Relief. 🛬🩺

The shipment includes cholera kits, a medical tent, and other critical items for our health center in Gorom Refugee Settlement, home to 21,000+ Sudanese refugees and others. This is even more important now since the rainy season started last month, and cholera is on the rise again.

Healthcare workers can now save more lives and provide better care for hundreds of patients with treatable conditions. We are so grateful to supporters like you and to Direct Relief for making this shipment possible! ❤️‍🩹

[ ] The trauma of living through the war in Ukraine is causing some people, many of them children, to develop speech disorders.

So Peace Winds and our local partner, Eleos-Ukraine, have teamed up with clinical psychologists and speech therapists. Experts like Lina are providing speech therapy for children at our "Family Hub" in the northwest.

"Most of the children I see here are between 3 and 16 years old and have fled from areas near the front lines," Lina says. "Some children have lost their ability to speak due to the shock of witnessing extreme events like explosions."

Don't forget: by joining the Project of the Month Club in May, you'll help refugee girls and women who are facing period poverty get period supplies, education, and other support.

Your donations go beyond just providing pads. They will also help Peace Winds:

🩸Provide other essentials that girls and women lack, like underpants and cleaning supplies
🩸Educate students about menstruation, how to use pads, and other critical gender and reproductive health topics
🩸Lead discussions with girls and boys to shatter stigmas that make girls ashamed of their periods

[ ] In the small village of Gunjiya in Kenya's northeastern Garissa County, the old, unusable borehole used to mean long, unsafe journeys—especially for women and children—to collect often contaminated water.

But a recent Peace Winds/UNICEF program has transformed the borehole into a solar-powered system that can reliably deliver safe water for years to come.

[ ] Peace Winds staff and local partners have delivered much-needed supplies to six villages in northern Sumatra, Indonesia that were hit hard by devastating floods last December. This includes bottled water, hygiene items, and tools to help families clear mud and debris from their homes.

Although survivors are still far from getting back to their “normal” lives, the smiles, gratitude, and heartfelt stories they shared reaffirm our commitment to supporting their road to recovery.

[ ] Peace Winds has been working with farmers in western Uganda–both refugees and local residents–to construct and equip a new processing facility for their crops. 🌾

The new space is part of Peace Winds’ agricultural training program, helping farmers learn new skills, earn a better living, and strengthen food security at a time of increasing food shortages in the region.
