[ ] Peace Winds’ response also extends to animals and the people who care for them.
Our team distributed pet food and other supplies at a McDonald’s now serving as an animal shelter, vet clinic, and pet support hub. Local veterinarians and volunteers are caring for animals and helping reunite pets with their families, including one cat and owner who reunited after 30 days apart.

We will continue to listen to survivors as we work to fill the gaps that remain.

[ ] Two months after twin earthquakes devastated Venezuela, Peace Winds teams remain on the ground supporting survivors and reaching communities that have received little or no assistance.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve helped provide essential supplies—including hygiene kits, baby supplies, and menstrual health products—to more than 4,000 people. We’re also working with local partners and restaurants to provide hot meals, support small businesses, and connect survivors with psychosocial support.

From meeting physical needs to helping families rebuild connections and community, Peace Winds remains committed to supporting Venezuela’s recovery.

[ ] Earthquake survivors with pets in Kumamoto are facing added challenges as many evacuation centers cannot accept animals. So some families are living in their damaged homes while others try to find alternative, pet-friendly housing.

Peace Winds is distributing pet food, carriers, and other supplies at survivors' homes. Teams also recently opened a doggy daycare, which is giving families a safe place to leave their animals while they deal with other responsibilities.

[ ] Almost four weeks have passed since the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture. Many areas are still without running water, and record-breaking temperatures have been making things difficult for evacuees.

Peace Winds is helping make life in evacuation centers a bit more comfortable by running bath and shower facilities. In addition to helping survivors maintain health and hygiene, the baths have become a place for neighbors to reconnect with one another.

[ ] Declining international support, rising inflation, and limited resources in Uganda make it harder for refugees and vulnerable communities—especially women—to access secure livelihoods.

Peace Winds provides trainings to help women build skills and access better economic opportunities. In northern Uganda, women in and around Ariyo 1 Refugee Settlement are putting these skills to work, using online marketing to sell handmade clothing and earn income.

Beatrice, who makes a living selling vegetables by the roadside, is learning digital marketing skills. She dreams of saving enough to buy a smartphone so she can reach more customers beyond her community.

[ ] More than two weeks after the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, the nature of survivors' needs are shifting, but they aren't shrinking.

Some evacuees have returned to their damaged homes. Others are staying in hotels while they await temporary housing. Amid extreme summer heat, ongoing water and power outages are particularly problematic for elderly survivors, many of whom have suffered heatstroke. And overstretched workers at assisted living facilities do not have enough resources to properly care for everyone.

Peace Winds teams are bridging some of these gaps. They continue to provide medical care, distribute bottled water and emergency supplies, serve hot meals, and run bathing facilities at evacuation centers and care facilities.

Still, supplies are limited, and much more will be needed to help residents through the coming weeks. Peace Winds will continue to support them through the transition from relief to recovery.

In just six days, a USJF fundraiser for Kumamoto earthquake relief exceeded its $25,000 goal. 🙏

The United States-Japan Foundation (USJF) and the United States-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP) will add another $25,000, with proceeds directed to Peace Winds America and its affiliate, Peace Winds Japan, which has led relief operations in the region since the magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck on July 28. [ ] After last week's deadly earthquake in Kumamoto, Peace Winds teams are providing relief in extreme summer heat.

Many survivors—especially older adults—are staying in their damaged homes without air conditioning or running water. For these so-called "invisible victims," mental and physical health changes can easily go unnoticed.

Our responders are treating injuries and helping evacuees get medications, food, water, bedding, and other emergency supplies. They have even set up temporary bathing facilities, bringing welcome moments of relief for survivors who had not been able to bathe since the disaster.
