At the inaugural “AU on the Hill” gathering, students, alumni, staffers, and lawmakers reflected on the university’s enduring role in public service careers.

🏆 Four remarkable alumni were recognized at the 2026 American University Alumni Awards. 🏆

Recognized this year were:

🎤 Neil Kerwin Alumni Achievement Award: Julie Andreeff Jensen, SPA/BA ’95, WCL/JD ’02, in recognition of her distinguished career advising leaders and championing women across business, sports, and public affairs.

🌟 Rising Star Award: Kathy Kim, SIS/BA ’16, her leadership at the forefront of artificial intelligence, policy, and ethics as senior AI advisor for the U.S. federal government.

🦅 Alumni Eagle Award: Nicholas Howon Park, WCL/JD ’02, Kogod/MBA ’03, for fostering a global alumni community through his stewardship of the South Korea Alumni Chapter and efforts to expand international partnerships and opportunities for fellow Eagles.

💙 Alumni Recognition Award: Teddy Tannenbaum, CAS/BA ’70, for his dedication to expanding access to inclusive, compassionate healthcare to transform the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families.

When Maryland voters head to the polls in November, two American University alumnae will be on the ballots. 🗳️

Both former employees of USAID, Allison Eriksen, SIS/MA ’16, and Tracy Starr, SPA/BA ’04, channeled job loss into civic purpose in the wake of the agency's dismantling last year. Ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, Eriksen launched a run for Montgomery County Council’s District 3 seat, while Starr is running for Congress in Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District.
