Dear friends,
More than 35 years after the fall of communism, Bulgaria still has no museum dedicated to this history where people are confronted with the repression and resistance, but also the choices, compromises and everyday lives shaped by Bulgaria’s communist regime. As the generation that lived through this communist period grows older, the time to preserve their stories is narrowing.
No public institution has yet taken on the responsibility of educating future generations about Bulgaria’s communist past, leaving younger generations to encounter this history largely through social media, where fragmented, often nostalgic, versions of the past take hold. Therefore we, the Sofia Platform Foundation, have decided to build this museum ourselves as a civic initiative with the support of people who believe that understanding our past determines our freedom today.
I would be delighted if you could join me in Washington, D.C., for a private evening in support of our initiative to create Bulgaria’s first museum dedicated to the history and legacy of communism.

5:30 PM EDT: Registration & Welcome Reception
6:00 PM EDT: Program Begins
6:30 PM EDT: Mingling & Light Hors d’Oeuvres
7:30 PM EDT: Evening Concludes
Location: Victims of Communism Museum, 900 15th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20005
This event, hosted in partnership with the Victims of Communism Museum, will unite individuals and organizations who are dedicated to Bulgaria, its historical memory, and the country’s democratic future.
During the program, I will present our vision for the museum, the work Sofia Platform Foundation has already undertaken, and how we plan to bring the project to life. Following brief welcome remarks and the presentation, we will continue over drinks and hors d’oeuvres with an opportunity to converse with other attendees about Bulgaria, historical memory, and the future we want to shape.
This is a fundraising program, and during the evening I will invite guests to support the planning, installation, and grand opening of FACADE – Bulgaria’s first museum of communism.
