The Cameroon Bar Association has called for urgent measures to protect children in schools, following what it describes as a resurgence of violence against minors.

Its Human Rights Commission says four children died between September 7 and 18, barely weeks into the new school year.

The cases cited include the death of two-year-old Inaya Mbouo in Bafoussam, two brothers aged six and ten who died after suddenly falling ill at Ngwelle Catholic Elementary School in Bonabéri, Douala, and the death of 12-year-old Moukoko Essoe Hozane at Collège de La Salle in Douala.

The Commission is calling for full investigations, stronger security and supervision in schools, and a national child-protection system for educational institutions.

It is also urging school authorities to cooperate with investigators and says perpetrators, once identified, must face justice.

The Fon of Nso, HRM Sehm Mbinglo II, was received with a traditional gun salute at the Bamoun Palace in the West Region this Saturday afternoon by Sultan Nabil Mbombo Njoya.

Fon Mbinglo II is scheduled to hold a community dialogue with the Nso community in the Noun Division tomorrow in Koutaba.

However, his courtesy visit to the Bamoun Palace was not treated like that of any other monarch. He was received by the Bamoun Nwerong (traditional secret society) and the Bamoun Sultan, and then offered a gun salut before being ushered into the palace.

The gun salute is rooted in the historical closeness of the Nso and the Bamoun kingdoms, which share a common ancestry originating from their Tikar homeland. Tradition recounts that both dynasties were founded by siblings Ngonnso, who founded Nso, and Nchare Yen, who founded Bamoun.

A succession dispute after the death of their leader around the 13th to 14th century had forced the siblings to leave their ancient homeland in search of a new settlement.

As they crossed the Mbam River (Adamawa region) alongside their supporters, the siblings chose separate paths. Nchare Yen moved westward to found the Bamoun Kingdom in the West Region, centred in Foumban, while his sister Ngonnso travelled toward the northwest highlands to establish the Nso Kingdom, centred in Kumbo, Bui Division.

The reception offered to Fon Mbinglo II therefore recognized the bond between two peoples who, despite taking different paths centuries ago, have remained strongly connected even in the modern era.
