Friends of Kingman and Heritage Island We advocate for the health, protection, and accessibility of Kingman and Heritage Islands - two of Washington, D.C.'s largest and most treasured greenspaces.

Our Mission:
The Friends of Kingman and Heritage Islands (FOKHI) is on a mission to:
- Empower the communities surrounding Kingman and Heritage Islands to advocate this treasured green space.
- Promote and advocate for educational, recreational, natural, and interpretive activities in Washington, D.C., principally on Kingman and Heritage Islands.

Friday Night Fishing is back next Friday! Whether you're a seasoned expert or have never fished before, we'd love for you to join us. Bait, tackle, and rods will be provided, and a member of our team will be there to help teach you how to fish!

We're teaming up with Casey Trees for a 3-day program called "Kingman Island Stewards: Protect Your Local Park."

Over three days from 8:30-11:30am, educators from Casey Trees and Urban Adventure Squad will guide rising 4th and 5th grade students on morning hikes to explore the islands and recognize the importance of protecting natural spaces. 🔍🌳

On the final day, we'll participate in Living Classrooms Foundation Green Boats program, and clean up litter from the river while paddling kayaks and canoes! ♻️🛶

Dive into environmental learning and earn your Kingman Island Stewards certification this summer. 🏅

We are cleaning up the area around RFK Fields and Kingman Island! Please meet us at Lot 6 next to Benning rd, where we will begin our cleanup and focus on preventing litter from running off into the Anacostia River!⁠

Schedule:⁠

5:00 PM – Meet at RFK Fields⁠
5:15 PM – Welcome and Safety Speech⁠
5:25 PM – Cleanup Begins⁠

Rain or Shine. All supplies provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that you can get dirty, which will protect you from the brush.⁠

Thank you D.C. United for volunteering on Kingman and Heritage Islands!

D.C. United volunteers planted over 500 new native plants and shrubs on Kingman this week. Two new benches were also installed creating much‑needed places for visitors to rest, reflect, and connect with nature. Living Classrooms is so grateful for your time and effort in keeping Kingman and Heritage Islands green and beautiful!💙
