AMP presents the values, vision and stories that have inspired Americans to live and work for peace that we might be inspired to build a more perfect union and a more peaceful world today. The American Museum of Peace (AMP) affirms those universal principles of high, noble thought and action that promote peace - principles of peace that are advocated by sacred teachings, wisdom traditions and glo

bal visionaries - many of which are established as a cornerstone of this country’s founding. These principles have inspired millions throughout history, serving as an inviolable affirmation that all people are created equal, that they are endowed with certain inalienable rights including life, liberty, freedom of conscience and the pursuit of happiness, and that when we live with integrity, love and respect, treating other lives as our own, and loving our neighbors as ourselves, we experience, extend, and enhance peace. Acknowledging that true peace is only possible when the principles of peace take root in our hearts and are consciously cultivated in our own lives and in our relations with others, AMP celebrates America’s peacemakers - those individuals, communities and organizations who have embodied, envisioned, endeavored, or persevered, in some measure, to uphold those universal principles that foster unity and advance peace. Affirming that we are members of one human family, living in an interconnected, interrelated and interdependent world, where whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly, AMP presents the stories, the history, the vision, compassion, courage, and selfless dedication of those who extolled and exemplified this in their lives and work, expanding our consciousness and broadening our opportunities. Appreciating that developing a conscious awareness of our essential unity and integrating this awareness in our lives is an evolving personal and social life journey and that we are best able to live and learn, evaluate and reflect, create and progress, when our best intentions, aspirations and efforts are respected and encouraged, AMP finds the good and praises it that we, each in our own way, might live and work, beyond perceived differences, to find common ground. Asserting that solutions can be found when we acknowledge our inherent, immanent oneness and treat other lives as our own, AMP postings, programs and exhibits encourage us to reflect, affirm, embrace and integrate the high ideals of principled thought and action in our lives, accepting our civic duty and moral responsibility to live by those universal principles that can sustain this nation, unite a people and give rise to a more perfect union and a more peaceful world. The AMP will present the many facets of peace – the inner, relational, national and global - for peace is about engaging those qualities, attitudes and actions that create peace. The AMP acknowledges the oneness of the human family and the various ways this affirmation is expressed in the philosophic, religious and spiritual traditions of Americans, from Buddhism to Zoroastrianism. Here are the stories of those who witnessed and labored for peace - some in ongoing ways, others at particular moments in the course of their personal and professional lives.

In the Media: A story of history in-the-making from a primary source. The Honorable J. Michael Luttig, former Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, speaks:

"...What I have subsequently said about ....all of us...is that we decide what we will do when the moment arrives for all the months and years leading up to that moment, such that when that moment arises in each of our lives, there is no decision to be made. We've made that decision years before...

"That's the hero. The hero has made the decision before the moment and in the moment there is no decision to be made. He or she does it....

"Once, twice, three times in our lives our moment comes - in our family, in our community, with our friends, and others - when we must stand and affirm what we believe and what we do not believe..."

Having immersed myself in environmental issues for several years I felt I had a good grasp of the challenges we face and an awareness of the international, national and local policy response, particularly as it pertains to energy production and use around which so many have directed their educational and advocacy efforts.

Focussed on the damaging effects of carbon dioxide we have been working, individually and collectively, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions without fully appreciating the heat-retaining effects of methane and nitrous oxide on the Earth's atmosphere.

The documentary "Eating for Tomorrow," (aka "Eating for Extinction [2021]") narrated by Kate Winslet, opened my eyes to the significant impact our personal dietary choices are having on the environment - startling facts which I had read but not fully appreciated until now.

When I first entered this field of work I prayed. If I have learned anything in life it is first to find out what, in me, is to be addressed in light of my concern, before I advocate or ask anything of others. I asked for direction as to what I was to change or do as a solitary individual. What I received surprised me, given the prevailing and programatic orientation of those with whom I worked. "Live - and teach - love and respect of life - all lives."

Everything we do has a ripple effect, from within - out. As soon as I/we understand, truly understand, that our orientation to life is mirrored in our experience, we will begin to see life enhanced.

As with all aspects of life I found that I keep coming back to one basic question: Who am I as a person? (Collectively, who are we as a people? ) Do I/we live affirming and embodying the Presence and Power of Love in and on Earth?

"Eating for Tomorrow" reminds us of the interconnected, interdependent, reciprocal nature of the Universe. As soon as we understand, truly understand, we will heal.

I thank VegRehoboth, PlanetDelaware and the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware for hosting and expanding our consciousness with this screening.

Namaste. 💖🙏💖

It's a pertinent question: "Can We Fix Our Nation's Broken Heart?"

With the timely release of "Can We Fix Our Nation's Broken Heart?" American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder and Molly Bonner urges us to embrace the solutions as they posit the question:

"Can We Fix Our Nation's Broken Heart?"
music by Stevie Wonder,
lyrics by Stevie Wonder and Molly Bonner:.

[Verse]
"Can we fix our nation's broken heart?
Are we brave enough to try? Mm-mm
Can we fix our nation's broken heart
And leave a better world behind?

[Bridge]
"'Cause if we listen to different thoughts and points of views
All my brothers and sisters, we don't have to lose
Humanity
We're family
So can we please
Fix our nation's broken heart

[Verse]
"Children marching down the boulevard
Tears are streaming down their face, oh-oh
Tension in the air is so bizarre
Love has gone without a trace

[Bridge]
"People pushing and shouting and fighting through the haze
And all this sadness, madness, help me take away the pain
It's gotta change
This can't stay the same
So tell me please
Can we fix our nation's broken heart?

[Middle eight]
"Poverty and homelessness
Can we do away with this?
All we need to is to be giving
For our daughters and our sons
There's a light in everyone
They deserve a new beginning, yeah

[Verse]
"Will the light we share survive the dark
Or will it slowly fade away? Ah-ah
Will the light of good be torn apart
And swept away by crushing waves?

[Bridge]
"We've been floating alone in a dark and bitter cold
'Cause there's a growing ocean of lies that we've been told
To tear us down
But what I've found
Is with our truth, compassion and love
We can fix our nation's broken heart

{Harmonica solo]
"Ah-ah
[Harmonica solo]

[Verse]
"Can we fix our nation's broken heart?
Are we brave enough to try? Hey - ey
We must fix our nation's broken heart
To leave a better world behind

[Bridge]
"We've come together with purpose far bigger than you and me
Don't have no time for hatred and negativity
It's you and me
We hold the key
So tell me please
Can we fix our nation's broken heart?

[Harmonica solo]
"Can we fix our nation's broken heart?
[Harmonica solo]
I know and you know
We must fix our nation's broken heart"

"If we all sing one song,
One song of love, one song of peace,
One song to make all our troubles cease,
One hymn, one theme,
One hope, one dream.
Imagine what tomorrow would bring,
If we all sing one song.

"If we all learned the words,
Just think how great the sound would be,
And since the tune is in freedom's key
One voice you'd hear,
So pure, so clear.
Imagine what tomorrow would bring,
If we all sing one song.

"There's just one sun that warms our day.
The same moon and stars light our way.
This little ball whirling in space.
It's our only home, our only place.

"If we all sing one song,
One song of love, one song of peace,
One song to make all our troubles cease.
Imagine what tomorrow would bring,
If we all sing one song.

"If we all learned the words,
Just think how great the sound would be,
And since the tune is in freedom's key,
One voice you'd hear,
So pure, so clear.

Imagine what tomorrow would bring.
Just imagine what tomorrow would bring,
Just imagine what tomorrow would bring,
If we all sing,
If we all sing one song.

"If we all sing, If we all sing,
If we all sing one song."

"...(5:05) We are having a relationship to the natural world that's based on a myth - that we can control it and our influence will determine its future - as if we know what the purpose of creation is. We don't...It's a mystery. So we need a little humility in the face of this mystery. We need a little respect for mystery. We don't know where we were before we were born and we don't know we're we're going to be a short while from now, when our bodies dissolve. We don't know that. But to quote my political mentor, Senator Alan Cranston, "We do know that on this Sphere and Infinite Space is Love..."

“Let truth be your walking stick. Integrity each step. There is no tomorrow or yesterday, just this moment of awe at the gift of life with all its beauty and challenges.

"The leader within you does not parade for attention, speaks from compassion and wisdom and understands we make one person as we move through our living.

"Our walking stick is made of the beauty of the earth, carved with the intent of justice and equality for all.”

"More important than our talents are our gifts. We may have only a few talents, but we have many gifts. Our gifts are the many ways in which we express our humanity. They are part of who we are: friendship, kindness, patience, joy, peace, forgiveness, gentleness, love, hope, trust, and many others. These are the true gifts we have to offer to each other."

"It is the eternal struggle between these two principles - right and wrong - throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time and will forever continue to struggle." Abraham Lincoln

This is an example of the incredible masterpieces produced via Mural Arts Philadelphia, the nation’s largest public art program, dedicated to the belief that art ignites change: https://www.muralarts.org/artworks/

In Context:

Abraham Lincoln's words are an extract of his rebuttal in a debate with incumbent Senator Stephen A. Douglas during the Illinois Senatorial Campaign of 1858:

"That is the real issue. That is the issue that will continue in this country when these poor tongues of Judge Douglas and myself shall be silent. It is the eternal struggle between these two principles -- right and wrong -- throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time, and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity and the other the divine right of kings. It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, 'You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it.' No matter in what shape it comes, whether from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle."

Our Story

American Museum of Peace (AMP): For a more perfect union and a more peaceful world

The American Museum of Peace (AMP) affirms those universal principles of high, noble thought and action that promote peace; principles of peace that are advocated by sacred teachings, wisdom traditions and global visionaries and established as a cornerstone of this country’s founding, inspiring millions throughout history: an inviolable affirmation that all people are created equal, that they are endowed with certain inalienable rights including life, liberty, freedom of conscience and the pursuit of happiness, and that when we live with integrity, love and respect, treating other lives as our own, and loving our neighbors as ourselves, we experience, extend, and enhance peace.
