Applications are now open for the Cohort 9 Women Veterans Leadership Program Alumni Ambassadorship!

This program represents our continued investment in Beneath the Service graduates. By leveraging the lived experiences of our WVLP alumni to mentor the incoming cohort, we provide a platform for past participants to practice and apply their coaching and facilitation skills in real-time.

The Role: WVLP Alumni Ambassadors play an active role in the five-month program, using the skills gained during their own experience to elevate the journey of Cohort 9.

Key Responsibilities:

Mentorship and Coaching: Lead small groups and provide one-on-one support as participants navigate the curriculum.
Facilitation: Facilitate activities and promote a supportive environment during virtual meetings and two required in-person sessions.
Curriculum Insight: Share your unique perspective to help refine the program and contribute to panels.
Commitment: Expect a weekly commitment of roughly 2–3 hours during the program.

Our Investment in You: We ensure Cohort 9 Alumni Ambassadors are equipped to lead with confidence through specific training and ongoing guidance. All travel, lodging, and meal expenses for the required in-person sessions are fully covered.

How to Apply: If you are ready to apply your leadership skills to support the next wave of women veterans, please apply at the link below.

Next week is Giving Tuesday, the global day of generosity. This year we are raising funds to continue changing the trajectory of veterans’ lives. At Beneath the Service, we know that transition out of the military means rediscovering purpose and community, beyond finding a new job.

Our goal for the coming year is bold: to provide fully funded support and reintegration programs for 1,000 veterans across the country in 2026. To do this, we need a community behind us.

Why now? Because the need has never been greater:

"Being part of the program through Beneath the Service was truly transformative for me. It gave me the space to pause, reflect on how my service shaped me as a leader, and reconnect with the power of my own voice. I walked away with not only a certificate from Virginia Tech, but also a stronger sense of clarity, confidence, and community."

This quote reminds us why we do this work. We also asked graduates of our programs what the biggest changes they’ve noticed in themselves were, and they replied with:

* A significant increase in confidence.
* Greater self-awareness and intentional use of their time.
* Renewed purpose and clearer direction in life.
* Embracing the veteran identity with pride.

But we cannot reach those 1,000 veterans without you. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 2nd, and invite a friend to join our email list so they can be part of Giving Tuesday too.

If you are ready to lead the way now, you don’t have to wait. You can make an early gift today to help us build momentum.

Thank you for standing with those who stood for us.

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served. In celebration of today, we are happy to announce that applications for our 2026 Women Veterans Leadership Program (WVLP) are NOW OPEN!

The WVLP provides women veterans with the skills and, just as importantly, the network to thrive as leaders. We focus on supporting participants to strengthen their resolve, reaffirm their sense of purpose, and build meaningful connections.

As one of our graduates recently shared: "I'm proud of being a veteran and feel more confident with that identity. I do have a voice and I should let it be heard".

If you are a woman veteran ready to take the next step in your leadership journey, we invite you to apply (application link in the comments).

* Know a woman veteran? Please share this opportunity with them.
* Employers: This a great opportunity for members of your Veterans Resource Groups.
* Alumnae: We'd love for you to refer someone in your network that could benefit from this opportunity

This program is free for all participants. You can help us keep it this way by investing in these leaders through a donation to Beneath the Service. There are many ways to give on our site, including stock, DAF, and endowments.

We're just 5 days away from opening applications for the 2026 Women Veterans Leadership Program (WVLP)!

Cohort 9 will bring nearly 50 women veterans who otherwise would not be in the same room, to examine their leadership strengths, study the concepts of power and group dynamics, and become more proactive in managing their careers and lives, among many other topics.

Through our visionary partners at Virginia Tech, all program graduates earn a university certificate equivalent to a three credit course.

Do you know a woman veteran ready to grow as a leader? Tag them below!

We're proud to cover all program costs for participants, including travel and lodging for the in-person sessions. As we approach week this month, consider supporting this effort to invest in veteran leaders - we now support more ways to give on our site. This week, we’re gearing up to as they come back to the DMV area for Module 2 and graduation from the Women Veterans Leadership Program! These leaders represent nearly 400 years of military service across all branches of the military.

We're looking forward to experiencing the energy they generate, and continuing to be inspired by their stories and ideas.

08/05/2025

During our first in-person gathering of the Women Veterans Leadership Program, members of Cohort 8 took their leadership skills from the classroom to the community, as we partnered with The Mission Continues for a hands-on service project at Mary Plummer Elementary School in Washington, D.C. We had the chance to meet principal, Terri Fuller, to talk about service and leadership. Her remarkable work in providing a safe and stimulating environment for the school’s 200+ children was a testament to her own leadership practice.

Cohort 8’s collective effort resulted in:

💪 47 total volunteers
🕜 188 total hours served
🫰 $34.79 / hour the average value of volunteer time, total impact at $6,540.52.
🎨 Projects completed: painting the teachers lounge, installing new plants, painting a map of the US on the playground, design updates to the gym and school hallways

By the end of the day, the outcome was a revitalized environment that students would return to on Monday. Though they did not meet those that would benefit from their work, the lesson here was that some of the most important work of leadership is that which never gets seen.

The momentum continues for Cohort 8 of the Women Veterans Leadership Program! Last night, our president, Niki Marin, hosted a session on Applied Leadership Strategy where she spoke about having a strong anchor for action, the tensions between structure and flexibility, and closing the leadership talk-doing gap. A memorable quote was, “leadership as a practice is rare, but talk is common.”

The applied leadership project is supported by the curriculum to allow our women veteran leaders to put their skills and reflections gained from the curriculum into something meaningful for them. As we often quote, “one of the joys in life is being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one.” We’re excited to see the results of their work in September when we gather for graduation of the program.

The WVLP is a one-of-a-kind, cohort-based leadership development opportunity that enhances leadership potential, promotes strong connections, expands networks and social support systems, all in service of building a community of veteran leaders across the United States.

Phase One of Beneath the Service's Women Veterans Leadership Program focused on the foundations of knowing yourself as a leader. We are now shifting from the individual to the group to understand how we shape the way others respond to us.

We're still buzzing from yesterday’s incredible virtual session. Our sincerest thanks to Dr. Debra Noumair from Teachers College, Columbia University for facilitating "Leadership in Context: What got you here won't get you there." Dr. Noumair, your insights were invaluable, encouraging our women veterans to reflect, and ultimately, lead with even greater intention. We learned how being adaptive and raising our social awareness can help us thrive in new leadership contexts.

And to all the phenomenal women of Cohort 8 who participated: your engagement, enthusiasm, and willingness to dive deep into the conversation made the session come alive. It's inspiring to witness your commitment to growth and leadership. We're so proud to support your journeys!
