Today is Global Running Day. Most years we come together today and celebrate our community and our members’ successes. But this year is different from other years.
*
Today, our members face an even greater burden from the social, economic and health crises of our time. COVID-19, economic upheaval and long-time, systemic racism create uphill battles for our members and alumni that can feel impossibly steep.
*
But we have hope. We believe in the dignity, value and equality of every person.
*
We believe in our members and alums, and we know you do too.
*
So today, run. Or walk. Or just move with a sense of purpose, knowing that as a community, we can shape a better tomorrow.

Name: Jim P.
Hometown: Greenbelt, MD
Favorite D.C. Running Route: Constitution Avenue hills
Running Mantra: “Running is an individual sport; we choose to run as a team.”

“I joined Back on My Feet because a friend was interested and I did it for moral support; I wasn’t involved in running before that. Since joining, I am more much in tune with the needs of the people around me. I don’t have a favorite BoMF memory in particular, but I am always moved by the graduation/senior member induction ceremony. It’s where I am reminded of the real impact we volunteers can have on people’s lives.”

Name: Kelly M.
Hometown: Philly
Favorite D.C. Running Route: Rock Creek Park heading north. It never gets old and I always find myself lost in the woods (in a good way).
Running Mantra: “We can definitely make this light.”
Best BoMF Memory: Can it be a tie? It's either a) training for my first marathon with BOMF every Saturday for months and then celebrating with members and volunteers over Ethiopian food after the race or b) experiencing the glory of the seagull and crab relay race at Snowlympics.
--------------------
“I always heard about Back on My Feet in Philly and was looking for a way to become more involved in my D.C. neighborhood. I loved running already and wanted to be part of a big community. On my first day 6+ years ago, I was so sleepy at 5:45am that I tripped and hurt myself running on the way to morning circle. I came very close to returning home when that happened but I'm glad I didn't, as joining that circle had a huge impact on me that day.

Back on My Feet has changed me into a morning person! More importantly, BOMF has made me a more active member of my neighborhood community, pushed me to create clear goals for myself, and allowed me to connect with members and volunteers that have become like family. I look up to a lot of the Team Petworth folks I run with each week and they push me to grow in every way. When we return back to our morning runs, I am most looking forward to catching up on ALL of the birthday jumping backs we missed. It’ll take a while!”

Name: Jessica R.
Hometown: Washington, D.C.
Favorite D.C. Running Route: Crestwood for the pretty houses and any route during Christmas with all of the lights and decorations!
Running Mantra: “Keep showing up.”
Best BoMF Memory: A few months ago with Rob- he is FAST- he pushed me so hard and I managed to keep up.
--------------------
“I joined Back on my Feet as a 50th birthday gift to myself- I wanted to be a volunteer and to be outdoors. The biggest lesson that I’ve learned as a Back on My Feet volunteer is to keep showing up. Some mornings are rough and sometimes you’re just slow. But each day builds on the last one and it all adds up. Since joining Back on My Feet, I’m more optimistic about the world and don’t let the little things get to me. I keep it all in perspective. When we return to our morning runs, I am most looking forward to sharing our names and the “morning question.” Some of the questions really make you think and some of the answers are hilarious (i.e. share your favorite t.v. theme song...and sing it!).”
