The lulav and etrog are more than just symbols of the harvest, they represent how we should live our lives each day, said Rabbi Sue Shankman in her Friday night sermon.

Can you resist the drive to conform? In her Yom Kippur sermon, Rabbi Rachel Schmelkin says that it's crucial in today's world.

Rabbi Rachel Schmelkin's Yom Kippur sermon encourages us to be brave in our convictions, even when the crowd may disagree.

You are amazing. Our annual High Holy Day Food Drive brought in 60+ boxes of non-perishable goods! One of the year's highlights is seeing the smiling faces of our partners from SOME (So Others Might Eat), Northwest Food Pantry, and YWCA National Capital Area who came by to pick up these important gifts for those in need across the DMV.

As Rabbi Sue Shankman shared at Rosh HaShanah, our theme for this year is Washington Hebrew: The Place My Heart Loves. If you're interested in learning more about the history of this place, how it came to be and how it's grown over 175 years, then our Mondays@Macomb class of the same name is for you!

The class runs for five weeks, and starts Monday, October 19. Dinner and drinks are included in the tuition. Registration details are in the comments below.

Israel wasn't the only thing on the minds of our members during our Yom Kippur study sessions. we also learned techniques for building calm dialogue back in this moment when conversation across political and cultural lines can feel harder than ever.

And the always-spry Dick Kaufmann regaled us with song and stories on how to remain young at heart.

Israel and the Middle East are always an important topic, and we were honored to have some special guests for our Yom Kippur study sessions this week.

Former journalist Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh offered insights into the upcoming Israeli elections. Thanks to Stephen Wise Free Synagogue's Reform Movement Alumni for Israel (RAFI), Natan Fund, and the Jewish National Fund - USA for supporting this event.

It was also a pleasure to host the Rabbi M. Bruce Lustig Human Relations Study Session with former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides in conversation with Mohammad Darawshe, a leading voice on Jewish-Arab relations and shared society in Israel.

A beautifully decorated bimah, September birthday blessings, and a lovely Shabbat@WHC service to kick off Sukkot tomorrow! Chag Sameach and we'll see you then!

It takes so many hands to decorate the Temple bimah for Sukkot, and we’re so grateful for every one of them! Thank you to the Women of WHC and our maintenance team for creating such a beautiful display. Chag Sameach! 🌿
