How can tech and data strengthen urban and climate resilience, while building local ownership? These were some of the key themes we actively explored during our co-session at the CBA20 conference in Manila, Philippines.
Through HOTโs Open Mapping Solutions, our suite of accessible mapping technologies, Honey Fombuena (GIS Analyst, Asia-Pacific) and Mikko Tamura (Community Manager, Asia-Pacific) shared interactive demonstrations and real-world examples of how communities around the globe use these tools to turn local data into actionable insights:
๐ In ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐๐ป, ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐๐ฒ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ, the Catalysing Data-Driven Community Heat Resilience project combines thermal drone mapping and citizen-led data collection to identify hotspots in the city. With this data, the Freetown City Council and local communities can plan targeted mitigation and adaptation measures, such as where to expand green spaces and upgrade heat-absorbing rooftops, working together towards their goal of 60% reduction in urban heat by 2030.
๐ In ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฎ, ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ต, the Dhaka Thrive Dashboard, visualized using uMap, serves as a centralized platform for community-generated data on hazard risks and critical facilities in informal settlements. This allows local stakeholders to design more informed, sustainable, and resilient urban solutions. ๐๐๏ธ
โTechnology alone is never enough. Local knowledge is just as valuable as technical data. Communities are not [passive] users of tools; they are decision-makers. We must design mapping not just as a technical exercise, but as a social process. This means investing in local leadership and supporting communities to use data for their decisions.โ โ Mikko Tamura, Community Manager for Asia-Pacific
