VATRA DC Chapter was founded on June 19, 2010. It covers Washington DC and the surrounding states of Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia and broader areas if necessary. VATRA DC Chapter is part of The The Pan-Albanian Federation of America VATRA- The Hearth that was established in Boston in 1912. It was the first Albanian-American society to be officially recognized in the United States; founded as a federation that brought together several Albanian -American patriotic organizations •From 1912-1920 VATRA functioned as an Albanian government in exile with delegates in many European capitals. It’s mission : To promote among Albanians in America, and through them among the Albanians in Albanian territories, the spirit of helping one another and of loving their nationality and heritage. To promote among them the sense of honor and love for the laws and institutions of the United States of America, and to strengthen the bond of friendship between the two nations.
Eleven leaders of this organization and the editor in chief of the oldest Albanian newspaper and also VATRA newspaper Dielli were executed or died in prison during the communist regime in Albania: Koco Kota – Former Prime Minister– died from tortures in Burrel Prison, Aqif Permeti–executed by the communist regime, Kole Tromara–-executed by the communist regime, Kristo Kirka– died in Burrel prison, Aqile Tasi-died in Burrel prison, Kole Rrodhaj-died in Burrel prison, Ali Kuci– died from tortures while he was interrogated, Faslli Frasheri- executed by the communist regime, Kristo Floqi- imprisoned by the communist regime, Andon Frasheri- Harvard graduate –imprisoned by the communist regime. Halit Qytetza – imprisoned by the communist regime and Bahri Omari chief-editor of the Dielli newspaper - executed by the communist regime.
VATRA DC Chapter as the oldest branch after VATRA revitalization will follow in the mission path of VATRA and will continue making public the crimes that took place during the time of communist regime in Albania. VATRA DC Chapter believes only in the fundamentals of individual freedoms, democracy and the rule of law.
