DSC’s Statement on the Lobbying Initiative for Bipartisan Mental Health Reform

Title in white text: DSC Statement on the Bipartisan Mental Health Reform Lobbying Initiative

Title is centered in a blue-purple border. Within the border contains the following body text:

While we are grateful for being extended the invitation to participate in and collaborate on the Lobby for Bipartisan Mental Health Reform, an initiative of GW Dems, GW Republicans, GW Democracy Matters, GW Partners in Health, and the GW SGA Mental Health Assembly, the DSC has made the collective decision to decline. The Disabled Students Collective (DSC) has an obligation to stand with the disabled students at GW now and in the future. We cannot, in good conscience, partner with GW Republicans, an organization whose recent political actions stand in direct contradiction with the core principles of disability justice-exemplified not three weeks ago by the hosting of R.F.K. Jr on campus, a direct and existential threat to the entire disabled community.

We cannot put our name as an organization behind an initiative where mental health is seen as conditional for some members of our community, and where the mental health of the disabled community is not meaningfully or substantially addressed.

DSC recognizes that there are moments when cross-party and cross-ideological collaboration is necessary in the pursuit of common goals. However, a common goal cannot exist when there is a disagreement on the foundational truth that disabled students have the right to exist in higher education and deserve a quality of life that includes access to healthcare and both physical and mental safety.

Disabled mental health cannot be meaningfully discussed in isolation from the erosion of our civil and human rights by the current administration. This, along with the loss of critical support systems at GW and beyond, directly contributes to worsening mental health outcomes for our community. Any initiative that fails to reconcile these causes we consider inadequate and not something we can endorse.

LINK TO SIGN ON STORY AND IN BIO. IMAGE DESCRIPTION IN CAPTION. On November 17th, Turning Point USA Foggy Bottom, in collaboration with GW College Republicans, is hosting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at GW’s Lisner Auditorium. RFK Jr. continuously spreads dangerous misinformation regarding autism and links its cause to vaccines, causing parents not to vaccinate their children and driving the spread of preventable diseases such as measles, which then kills innocent children and adults. He has  made statements such as “autism destroys families” and is an “individual tragedy as well.” RFK has made racist and completely untrue statements, such as “African AIDS is an entirely different disease from Western AIDS”, and compared the work of the CDC to “Nazi death camps.” He also stated that exposure to pesticides causes people to become transgender. Regarding mental health, he has said that Americans who take mental health medications are “addicts who need to be sent to wellness farms to recover.”  Absolutely none of RFK’s beliefs or policies align with the mission statements of his university. Any scientifically correct statements he has made are preceded by this misinformation, which leads to preventable deaths and causes discrimination against minority groups in this country and worldwide.
We implore GW to bar RFK Jr. from speaking on our campus. Allowing him to do so would tarnish this university’s reputation, its commitment to science, and the promotion of health in this country and globally.

“Turning 21, Samuel wants his independence. Yet every rite of passage is fraught with challenges and social barriers. Seizures and uncontrollable movements. Inaccessible housing. Degrading ableist encounters. ‘No one tells you how to be an adult,’ he says, ‘let alone an adult with a disability.’ Can a community of disability activists help him follow his dreams?”
