Fisher v. University of Texas is one of the most controversial cases before the Court this term! Up for decision is recent precedent on affirmative action programs for college admission. The Court is comparing the admission policies of the University of Texas to those of the Grutter v. Bollinger decision from the University of Michigan in 2003. How do you think the Court will rule?

Does the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution permit schools to search a student’s phone (iPod, Android, Blackberry, etc.) if they suspect the student was communicating with another student about selling drugs?

In the 2002 case of Board of Education of Pottawatomie County v. Earls, the Supreme Court upheld a public school district’s policy of giving drug-tests to students involved in extra curricular activities. Its ruling expanded the power of schools to search students.

The Supreme Court heard arguments today for United States v. Antoine Jones. The case boils down to whether or not the government can operate with around-the-clock surveillance of vehicles via GPS without a warrant. The DC Circuit ruled last year that the government needs a warrant.

The case presents some very interesting privacy issues. George Orwell's "1984" was referenced at least six times in the arguments. What do you think? Should the government be required to obtain a warrant?

"Just 13 percent of high school seniors who took the 2010 National Assessment of Educational Progress, called the Nation's Report Card, showed a solid grasp of the subject. Results released Tuesday showed the two other grades didn't perform much better, with just 22 percent of fourth-grade students and 18 percent of eighth-graders demonstrating proficiency."

A new national assessment finds that less than a quarter of students are proficient in U.S. history.
