Twelve people from across DC have said yes to something pretty remarkable.

Starting in September, they'll meet every week for eight weeks, many of them as strangers, to learn how to find, shape, and tell a true story from their own lives. That means showing up on a Tuesday night when you'd rather not. Telling a story you've never told out loud. Trusting people they might never otherwise have had the chance to know.

In November, they'll stand up in front of friends, family, and neighbors in Woodland Terrace in SE and share those stories.

Through our We Care storytelling workshops, we've seen what happens when people tell each other the truth about their lives: they laugh together, cry together, recognize themselves in someone they thought was different, and sometimes leave as friends.

The twelve have committed. Now we're asking our community to help make their experience possible. We're raising $7,000 to keep the program free for participants, covering meals, space, materials, storytelling artist Renee Brachfeld's work, and the November celebration.

$30 feeds a participant for two evenings.
$125 covers our meeting space for a night.
$600 supports one participant through the full program.

Community Renewal Capital Area is a 501(c)(3), so your gift is tax-deductible.

We are mourning the loss of the incomparable Dolly Parton, who, in addition to writing an estimated 3,000 songs, was one of the few people almost every American could agree on. We loved her deeply for her brilliance, wit, and raw talent.

But dare we say we loved her most because she led with kindness. Not as a brand, but as the way she actually operated. Publicly and proudly, she used her platform to spread love and gave away millions, backing it.

Dolly called “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” her “song of deliverance.” It’s about resilience and having hope. Give it a listen if you have a chance!

We will always love you, Dolly.

We believe relationships change communities.
Care starts with noticing someone, showing up, and reminding them they matter.

Daniels’ story is a beautiful example of how one simple act can open the door to hope, opportunity, and connection.

Caring doesn’t cost a thing—but it can change everything.

Happy Birthday, America!

Caring is as American as apple pie.

From quilting circles to potlucks to a TV neighbor who taught generations of Americans that kindness was worth 30 minutes of daily programming — looking out for each other has always been part of the culture.

The data backs it up: 3 in 4 Americans believe there's more that unites us than divides us, no matter which side of the aisle they're on.

We Care Partners demonstrate every day what it's like to show up for their neighbors, and their care is contagious.

Give us a follow, and learn more about getting involved as a We Care Partner!

Once you start looking for it, you see intentional care everywhere. Small moments. Real people. Every single day. And it doesn't just help the person on the receiving end — it changes the giver too. Coming together as We Care Partners makes it powerful.

What do a pastor in Shaw, a book club in Chevy Chase, a pharmacy in Dupont Circle, and a neighbor in Woodland Terrace all have in common?

A desire to build a We Care World.

Where businesses, faith communities, nonprofits, and neighbors are united behind one movement — looking out, reaching out, and showing up for each other. Intentionally, and united behind a culture of care.

This is what we're building in the Capital Area. Swipe to see it — and find your place in it! https://communityrenewalcapitalarea.org/join-us/

A neighbor posted this on Nextdoor this week, and we can't stop thinking about it.
The research backs up what this story makes us feel: kindness is contagious. When people witness a caring act, or even just hear about it, they're far more likely to pass it on. One bottle of water reached over 1,100 neighbors before it reached you.

This is exactly why we're mobilizing a team of neighbors across the capital area — people just like this man and the kind woman who stopped for him - to make caring acts like this intentional, visible, and powerful. That's what We Care Partners is all about.

A We Care World isn't built on grand gestures. It's built on noticing each other.

The loneliness epidemic is real. But so is the cure.
The science is clear — care is contagious, connection makes communities safer, and showing up for each other changes cities.
