Everything Corey is saying is 100% true— and it doesn’t have to be like this.

The DC Council and Chairman Phil Mendelson have the chance to not just change the narrative, but actually save the safety net.

proposed a 3% Wealth Proceeds Tax that we are demanding Council vote ‘yes’ on to generate $180M that could then go towards programs that would make things like more mold inspections, increased vouchers, and more possible.

Give Mendelson’s office a call today and leave his staff a voicemail for the morning:

Support a 3% wealth proceeds tax and restore DC’s safety net!

Alliance. TANF. School behavioral health programs.

There’s a lot $180M could do — if you are a DC resident there’s still time to call Chairman Mendelson’s office and demand that he vote ‘yes’ on a 3% Wealth Proceeds Tax if introduced so provide much-needed funds for vital programs that have been slashed in Mayor Bowser’s budget.

Call now: 202-724-8032 and drop a 🤳 in the chat once you’ve done it!

Are you a DC resident? Do you care about restoring DC’s safety net?

Take a moment to call Chairman Mendelson’s office to demand the following:

Vote ‘Yes’ on a 3% Wealth Proceed Tax

has proposed a 3% wealth tax on some of DC’s wealthiest residents.

This tax would mostly impact millionaires, and would raise almost $180 million dollars to fund vital social safety net programs.

We demand that Chairman Mendelson, and all of our council members act and vote in support of this proposal. Wealth is significantly undertaxed, which means that DC leaves resources on the table that it could be using to save our safety net instead! The money is there. Our lives are in their hands.

Business Activity Tax (BAT)

The 3% wealth tax is a huge step in the right direction, but we also need to go further to put DC on a path to security by having equitable taxes on the wealthiest businesses. We know that the years to come will continue to bring economic hardship. We demand that the council pass a BAT now to raise $505.8 million dollars in years to come.

Right now, Chairman Phil Mendelson is deciding the future of DC’s budget. He has an opportunity to prioritize care and sustainability over wealth hoarding, over-policing, and harm.

The cuts in the proposed budget would leave thousands without access to healthcare, access to housing, access to food, true community safety, youth programming, quality education and more. The results will be devastating for all, and for those already living at the margins of our society, deadly.
It doesn’t have to be this way.

We’re escalating now because the District and residents are in crisis, the first budget vote is taking place in a matter of days and as it stands, our full safety net is under attack.

The funding levels in the proposed budget would push folks in poverty over the edge into homelessness, poverty, despair, and literal death while simultaneously slashing programs for those experiencing the impacts of these harm.

Chairman Mendelson has a choice to make. Next Tuesday, on June 9th the council will vote on his proposed version of the copy.

The choices he makes over the next few days will determine our ability to survive. We are showing up to demand that Chairman Mendelson tax wealth to save our safety net.

Taxing wealth will save our safety net.

Chairman Mendelson, our lives are in your hands. Tax wealth to save our safety net.

Yesterday night, our Coalition Organizer .bos led a visual demonstration on the front of Union Market directly calling on Chairman Phil Mendelson to support the 3% Wealth Proceeds Tax proposed by (thank you CM Nadeau!)

Following the work session it’s clear—the budget, if not changed, tells a story of a government that would rather invest in mass surveillance and incarceration than care and sustainability.

Chairman Mendelson, do the right thing and explore progressive and equitable revenue raisers like the proceeds tax in order to restore the safety net and protect the constituents who look to you to do the right thing.

Feeling inspired to act?

📧 Take 30 seconds to send Mendelson a note urging him to support the Wealth Proceeds Tax:

has an opportunity to invest in true community safety by addressing the root causes of crime and re-allocating the $89M proposed increase to MPD’s budget towards essential safety net programs.

This is a budget year where we are being told that those with the least must make sacrifices. Programs we rely on to survive must face cuts. There is no new money for anything. Yet the police are receiving a 15% increase in overall funding—why is this the policy choice that our leaders are making?

It doesn’t have to be.

CM Brooke Pinto, we’re asking you to be brave and re-allocate the proposed MPD funding towards restoring DC’s safety net.

Will you invest in the people of DC, Brooke?

is in markups and has the opportunity to shape how we invest in community safety—which doesn’t mean a 15% increase to MPD funds.

The community demands that :

1️⃣ Divert $89M in proposed funds for MPD towards essential safety net programs, including $30M towards the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) and the remaining $59M to literally ANY other safety net program

2️⃣ Explore progressive revenue raisers including the Business Activity Tax (BAT), Land Value Tax (LVT), and fairly taxing DC’s immense wealth

Council, we know you heard us 🦻

“I can’t pull anything…”

We’re grateful to for stopping by our safety net Jenga tower activation outside of Wilson to learn more about the interconnectedness of our programs, as well as the urgent importance for to restore DC’s safety net.

As CM Felder mentioned, our most vulnerable residents—including many lifelong Washingtonians living in Ward 7—rely on these programs to survive and avoid being displaced from the District they call home.

This year, we are urging Council to 1) divert a proposed $89M increase to MPD’s budget towards essential safety net programs, including the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) and 2) explore progressive revenue raisers to support the long-term stability of these programs.

Council, as you go through mark-ups remember that these intense times—marked by a worsening federal occupation, a youth crisis, and encampment clearings to turn DC into a white supremacist’s playground—call for intensely courageous leadership.

Who will step up and say ?
