Today is National ! In the United States, more than 437,000 people are directly employed in the public transportation industry, working each day to keep Americans moving to jobs, classrooms, medical appointments, shopping, and to see friends and family.

We celebrate on March 18, because that is the day that public transportation came into existence, with the 1662 start of Blaise Pascal's horse drawn bus system in Paris, France.

Since then, buses and ferries have moved away from literal horse-power and paddles to new power sources, and trains have also been invented, but public transportation systems still depend on hard working employees to keep local communities moving.
Thank you to all the vital the front line equipment operators, mechanics, construction workers, planners, accountants, engineers, cleaners, lawyers, techies, police, and additional support staff who deliver mobility to tens of millions of Americans everyday.

"Metro emerged as public transportation intended not merely to transport commuters, but to build, in Johnson’s terms, 'a place where the city of man serves not only the needs of the body and the demands of commerce but the desire for beauty and the hunger for community.'" https://washingtonian.com/2026/03/11/dc-metro-rail-wmata-history/ [Metro Forward]

As our region’s iconic rail system turns 50, we ask the big questions—and some little ones, too.

"’s electrification offers a glimpse of how rail systems can improve service, attract riders, and cut emissions without building new lines. Upgrading existing corridors can complement plans for high-speed rail — or provide a faster, cheaper way to improve regional transit — even as agencies grapple with post-pandemic ridership declines and uncertain funding."

A $2.4 billion upgrade is shaving minutes off Caltrain trips through Silicon Valley, doubling weekend ridership, and reducing riders’ exposure to toxic diesel pollution.
