"Our students need to know more about civics, to be sure, but we need to know more about teaching."

UPenn History professor Jonathan Zimmerman argues that the civics education movement also needs to teach teachers HOW to teach civics. Without effective instruction, any efforts to revive civics knowledge "will be building on sand."

Civic education initiatives are important, but they will only be successful if professors are better prepared to teach them, and institutions provide real incentives for good instruction.
