Laura Pollán Toledo: Nonviolent Civil Disobedience and Historical Memory
Today marks the 15th anniversary of Laura Pollán's death, the leader of the Ladies in White movement and a defining strategist of contemporary Cuban nonviolent resistance.
Following the March 2003 Black Spring wave of repression, she implemented rigorous civil disobedience tactics to demand the freedom of political prisoners.
Her strategy focused on reclaiming public spaces through silent marches, utilizing white clothing and gladioli as visual symbols to disarm the Cuban regime's violent narrative.
This tactical discipline proved its historical effectiveness in July 2010, when the movement forced the dictatorship to negotiate the mass release of the remaining 52 political prisoners from the Black Spring.
For years, she faced a systematic history of state repression that escalated significantly before her death. This included a deliberate highway vehicle ramming attack captured live during the filming of the documentary Soy la another Cuba, alongside multiple complaints of suspicious needle pricks inflicted by regime mobs during her final Sunday marches.
She died under strict state medical custody on October 14, 2011, at the Calixto García Hospital in Havana. Investigative reports later exposed that the physician who guarded her ICU room and blocked all medical updates from her family was actually undercover State Security Agent "Fernando" (Carlos Leonardo Vázquez).
Eyewitness testimonies regarding the state of her body indicated severe fluid accumulation caused by a deliberate withholding of diuretics. This medical interference, combined with the immediate forced cremation of her remains without an independent autopsy, confirms deep-seated political assassination claims within civil society.
In deep recognition and tribute, the movement formally adopted her name, cementing her legacy as the organization´s guiding force.
Today, Laura Pollán is more present than ever, living in the heart of the Cuban opposition, which remembers her as an example of struggle and courage.
