We hosted our first Saturday Drop In Program of the school year at the Jubilee Center last weekend! What a fantastic way to kick off the fall season. We were delighted to welcome students from all of our different sites for a fun day together.

A big thank you to the members of First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Christ Central Presbyterian Church, and Great Commission Community Church for volunteering with us this past weekend. We appreciate your support and the time you spent with our students!

This year, 21 Little Lights students in our College and Career program are continuing their education at colleges and universities across the country! We look forward to seeing where this next year takes them and are proud of all their hard work. Thank you to our donors, mentors, volunteers, and staff for supporting our students!

As one of our students shared, “I’m grateful for the opportunities Little Lights has already given me, especially the chance to continue my education. I want to make the most of those opportunities and keep moving forward.”

Why does Asian American history matter for Christians? This lecture seeks to answer this question by reviewing the history of the Chinese Exclusion Era (1882-1943), and the Chinese American Christians that lived during that time.

Led by Master of Theological Studies student, Samuel Chao, this Race Literacy Seminar will examine the religious lives of four Chinese Americans and highlight their social justice activism as a form of lived religion. Reflecting on these Chinese American Christian histories and religious frameworks can help inform our faithful witness during our present moment of intense immigration debates and political strife, which are not unlike the Chinese Exclusion Era.

As our team is preparing for the start of the new school year, we are recruiting new volunteers to serve in our after school programs! We have two main opportunities for regular volunteers:

-Homework Club: Support students pre-k through 8th grade with academics, recreation time, and meal times. Commit to serving one day a week from 3:30-6:00pm either weekly or biweekly.

-Reading and Math Heroes: Support students by providing one-to-one reading or math support. Commit to serving weekly on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6:00-7:30pm.

We’d love for you to consider joining us as a volunteer this school year - head to the link in our bio for more information on volunteering and to submit an application.

Little Lights has been faithfully serving under-resourced students and families in DC for over 30 years through the faithful generosity of our donors. Our monthly donors in particular help reliably fund our programs, enabling our team to provide long-term and holistic support for students and families that need it most.

This month we have a unique opportunity for your giving to have double the impact! Through the generosity of our Board of Directors, we have $10,000 in matching funds available for our Monthly Donor Matching Campaign. In August, if you start a new monthly donation or increase your current monthly donation, your gift will be doubled for the next year!

Would you consider partnering with us as a monthly donor? Head to the link in our bio to start a monthly donation!

Summer is a unique time for our College and Career program because our college students return, allowing us to see them in person!

This summer, 24 high school and college students worked with us part-time through DC’s Summer Youth Employment Program. These students helped make Summer Lights run smoothly by providing extra support for younger students needing one-to-one attention and leading cheers, games, and worship songs during Opening Assembly.

Additionally, we hosted a two day workshop where we supported high school students with college exploration and research and heard from some of our current college students about their experiences. We also led a session on goal setting for the upcoming school year, discussing potential challenges they may face and what resources are available to them to provide support.

It’s been a great summer with our College and Career students and we’re eager to continue supporting them as they begin a new school year!

Last week we wrapped up Summer Lights, our 5-week summer day camp. Over 150 students participated in Summer Lights this year, playing games, learning dances, completing academic enrichment activities, and enjoying summer. It was a great summer filled with joy, learning, and friendship. We are so grateful for all our volunteers, staff, and donors who made Summer Lights possible!
