20 EU countries have already ended fur farming. The EU is now weighing whether to ban all fur farming or whether tighter welfare standards would be the better route.

A new report finds that ending the fur trade in the EU once and for all would not only be better for animals, the environment and our public health, but would also be cheaper for tax payers. A no brainer.

As the EU decides whether to ban fur farming or introduce welfare standards, we compare the public cost of the two approaches. We find that standards designed to keep production going cost more than a phased ban.

In a recent commentary published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, zoonotic disease experts and academics are warning that fur farming poses a preventable public health threat following lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic.

As we wait on the Commission’s decision on the ‘Fur Free Europe’ European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), it's clear that ending the fur trade globally is necessary for animals and humane alike.

“'...there’s a real concern that mink, particularly farmed mink, have a lot of the features that could drive the evolution of H5N1'...In 2022, an outbreak of H5N1 on a mink farm in Galicia, Spain, infected more than 50,000 animals and marked the first documented evidence of mammal-to-mammal transmission of the virus."

Last week, avian influenza was detected for the first time on a fur farm in the United States, located in Utah. Mink fur farms pose a particularly high risk of disease transmission because mink are vulnerable to both human and animal influenza viruses, making them essentially "mixing vessels" for zoonotic diseases. But a concerning provision in the House and Senate Farm Bill would give taxpayer funds to prop up the dying U.S. fur industry. Learn more about the recent detection here:

"There is a proliferation of these types of cheap products online and I believe most consumers would believe these to be faux fur given the cost and look...we're not talking about luxury fur coats. We're talking about cheap children's toys, fluffy key rings and small trinkets that no reasonable consumer would expect to contain real animal fur."

Laboratory testing of seven fluffy toys and key rings sold online and at markets in NSW has found every product contained real animal fur despite some being marketed as fake fur, raising concerns about what consumers are buying.

Next month, the Emmy Awards will hold its first fur-free telecast, including the red-carpet. Advancements in bio-based technology have made faux fur better in quality and environmental footprint, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell the difference on screen and in person.
