Fair Trade Tai Chi

Fair Trade Tai Chi Fair Trade Tai Chi is a Wash. D.C. based non-profit dedicated to preserving this "soft" Martial Art. We wish to share this with all our T'ai Chi friends.

Our 'new' approach to this ancient art brings us back to its origins. The initial insight of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, that the soft can overcome the hard was not a philosophical concept, rather it was a demonstrable technique in which an opponent's speed and strength are overcome with a soft technique. Our own speed and strength are not a concern in self-defense; and in fact they are a hinderance. Knowing

this counterintuitive fact, and the soft technique, opens the T'ai Chi Ch'uan Classics up for a different interpretation than the modern perspective. Currently the Classics are mostly considered a valuable tool in one's T'ai Chi Ch'uan studies, yet they are more inspirational and metaphorical than literal in nature. Contrarily, we feel that these Classics have captured the original oral tradition that was striving to preserve a practical, albeit counterintuitive, technique of the soft overcoming the hard. We further believe that Professor Cheng Man Ching revealed this codified system in his Cheng Tzu's Thirteen Treatises on T'ai Chi Ch'uan that teaches the technique and the tradition in which stillness and softness can truly overcome the fast and strong.

Next Class!

Fair Trade Tai Chi's next 10 week session, led by Stephen J. Goodson, starts on Thursday, October 19th 2017, and will go until December 21st. Our 2 hour classes are from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at IMF Gym, HQ1, 700 19th Street, NW Washington, DC 20431 (Farragut West Metro).

In our weekly Tai Chi Push Hands class we will practice and explore the Tai Chi Form and Tai Chi's two-person exercises (Tui Shou, Da Lu, and San Shou). We will also look at how Tai Chi's Ti Fang (uprooting) technique clarifies the form and gives purpose to the two-person exercises. Tai Chi is an amazingly soft and bewilderingly powerful art.

“I love that they highlighted the line, ‘The two-person exercises are akin to practicing tennis with a friend, rather than competing in a tennis match with an opponent…’ which is Billy’s brilliant imagery and his wonderfully crafted line. We are quite proud of this little book!” — Stephen

In our classes we explore the core 13 postures of Tai Chi. These 13 are seen in Tai Chi's form and in Tai Chi's two-person exercises (Tui Shou, Da Lu, and San Shou). We will also look at how Tai Chi's Ti Fang (soft uprooting) technique clarifies the form and gives purpose to the two-person exercises. Tai Chi is an amazingly soft art that is bewilderingly powerful—-the weak can assuredly overcome the strong.
