Cold War Gallery - U.S. Navy Museum A new Cold War Gallery to tell the story of the Navy's role in our nation's 50-year conflict with the Soviet Union.

The Naval Historical Foundation is raising funds to support its construction, and also maintains this page.

The National Museum of the United States Navy and the Cold War Gallery will be closed all day on Sunday, November 10, 2013, so that the Washington Navy Yard can complete critical maintenance projects on various buildings. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause those wishing to visit the Navy's national museum, which will reopen at 10:00 am on Monday, November 11, 2013 (the Museum will operate on holiday hours on Veteran's Day).

The bell from the ex-German heavy cruiser PRINZ EUGEN is currently on display at the Cold War Gallery at Washington Navy Yard. PRINZ EUGEN was used as a target ship during the atomic testing of Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in 1946. The bell had been removed prior to the atomic testing.

USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65) model on display in the Cold War Gallery, Washington Navy Yard. This model was on loan from the Navy to President John F. Kennedy and was on display in his office at the time of his assassination in 1963. This is one of two ENTERPRISE models currently on display in the Cold War Gallery.

This model of a Soviet MiG-15 F***t was sponsored by Captain E. Royce Williams, VF-781. In an engagement that threatened to turn the Cold War into a hot one, on 18 November 1952, then-Lieutenant Williams and his wingman, flying F9F-5 Panthers, intercepted 7 Soviet MiG-15's flying on a direct course towards USS ORISKANY off North Korea, and were fired upon by the MiG's. Williams shot down several of the MiG's, and the remainder turned back for Vladivostok. This model was hand built by Michael McLeod for the Cold War Gallery, at Washington Navy Yard.
