Danell had no reason to expect that his most recent trip to Trinidad would end anywhere but home.

He grew up in New Jersey. His family got green cards when he was four years old. Danell occasionally visits family back in Trinidad, where he was born, but his life is in the United States with his two children.

When he landed in Texas following his latest trip to Trinidad, he was detained at the airport because of a past conviction he was told would not jeopardize his legal status.

After months in detention, Danell managed to accomplish something exceedingly rare under the Trump administration: he won his case and got released.
