Black gay men living in the U.S. are more likely than other groups to be sexually active with someone who is living with HIV. Preventing HIV acquisition is key to ending the HIV epidemic. The National Black Gay Men’s Advocacy Coalition is working to ensure that Black gay men living with HIV have unfettered access to life-saving HIV medications. We are also working to prevent new HIV transmission. Our new project “PrEP Desirability in Black America (PDiBA)” is designed to learn what barriers prevent use today, and then advocate for the implementation of models to, increase PrEP use among Black Americans. It will take all of us, and our Black trans sisters like Hope Giselle-Godsey are integral to getting achieving our goals. 🙏🏾💕

NBGMAC has a new project: PrEP Desirability in Black America (PDiBA). The project was developed to address the low uptake of PrEP among Black Americans despite having one of the highest rates of HIV in America. Sexually active Black Americans don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary to come into contact with HIV. Pre Exposure Prophylaxis with a pill or a long acting injection makes that reality one less thing to worry about. PrEP when used as directed, stops new infections, takes the fear of HIV acquisition away from sexually active people. PrEP is free through health insurance, and very low costs almost for everyone else in the U.S. The time is now, we can and we must! Check out this space for updates on PDiBA!

The Affordable Care Act ensures that health insurance companies are required to provide preventive services like Pre Exposure Prophylaxis ( PrEP) which protects individuals from contracting HIV, for FREE. Despite this federal law, many insurance companies do a lousy job of making this service easily available. This results in many people who should be on PrEP delaying or not getting on at all because they think they have to pay. Insurance companies know differently but they don’t tell the insured. This report👇🏾 outlines that fact and gives some reasons why. Have you ever tried to access PrEP through your health insurance and been given the run around? Share your story with us.
