Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not just a historical milestone. True freedom requires continued work to ensure every person can live safely and exercise their rights. Today, we honor that legacy and reflect on the importance of expanding access to justice for all.

Melissa Wallace-Pulliam was 44 years old when she was murdered on Tuesday at a bus stop in NW DC. According to her daughter, Melissa had recently left her boyfriend and was trying to build a safer future after enduring years of abuse. She was on her way to work when he shot and killed her.

Melissa's death is a heartbreaking reminder of a reality we see too often: the most dangerous time for a survivor is when they try to leave an abusive partner.

As we continue to recognize Gun Violence Awareness Month, we must acknowledge the deadly intersection of domestic violence and fi****ms. Too many women lose their lives when an abuser has access to a gun. Too many families are left grieving loved ones who were bravely trying to escape abuse.

No one should have to risk their life to escape abuse. Please join us in ensuring that survivors have access to the legal protections, advocacy, and support they need to live free from violence. Learn more at volunteerlegaladvocates.org/gvam.

Today, a woman was killed in Northwest DC in what police say was a domestic violence-related homicide.

While much of the news coverage is focused on the shooter, our thoughts are with the woman whose life was taken and the loved ones now left grieving.

This tragic loss reminds us that domestic violence and gun violence are deeply linked.

During Gun Violence Awareness Month, we're raising awareness about firearm relinquishment and other measures that can help protect survivors before violence turns deadly.

Today, we hold those who are grieving in our hearts and recommit ourselves to the work of preventing future violence in our community.

This Pride Month and year-round, we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, and we're committed to showing up for the survivors of domestic and gender-based violence within it.

LGBTQIA+ people experience domestic violence at the same or higher rates as the general population, yet too often face discrimination when seeking help. At Volunteer Legal Advocates, we offer free, trauma-informed legal services for survivors of all backgrounds through walk-in clinics, court representation, and partnerships with local organizations, including Whitman-Walker, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, AsylumWorks, and Latin American Youth Center.

To every LGBTQIA+ survivor: you deserve safety, dignity, and justice. We're here to help.

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, and there's no better time to stand with survivors and disarm abusers.

DC law requires abusers to surrender their fi****ms when a civil protection order is issued, but enforcement gaps put survivors at continued risk.

That’s why Volunteer Legal Advocates convened a task force to develop recommendations to strengthen gun relinquishment in DC. Now, we're launching our gun relinquishment campaign.

We have resources and steps for everyone: survivors, attorneys, and community members who want to help.

And if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence with an armed abuser, we're always here to provide free, confidential legal help in DC and Montgomery County, MD.

We are proud and grateful for the incredible attorneys recognized on the 2025 Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll.

This year, a record-breaking 6,052 attorneys were honored for completing 50+ hours of pro bono service, with 57% qualifying for the High Honor Roll at 100+ hours. That is an extraordinary commitment to justice, and we celebrate you all.

We are especially thrilled to recognize the many honorees who have volunteered with us at Volunteer Legal Advocates.

Thank you for showing up for the survivors and children who need a voice and an advocate, and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition! We are honored to work alongside you.
