“The Jaws of Death.”

One of the most dramatic and widely published photos of the D-Day invasion was taken by Chief Petty Officer Robert F. Sargent, USCG. It captures the action aboard a Coast Guard-manned LCVP from the USS Samuel Chase (also Coast Guard manned) disembarking troops of Company E, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division on the morning of June 6, 1944, at Omaha Beach.
